Myths about Soccer

If you have played club soccer and/or on a good high school team, you have heard a lot of confusing information about college soccer programs. The following list of myths and facts may help clarify some of that misinformation.

MYTH #1: Outstanding high school female soccer players only choose to attend NCAA Division I colleges and universities.

FACT: The players that you will hear from later had numerous offers from NCAA Div. 1, 2 and 3 programs, but chose Georgetown for the variety of reasons they state.


MYTH #2: The level of soccer play is much higher at the NCAA Div. 1, 2 and 3 programs.

FACT: Georgetown College plays in the NAIA Division I because it is a small Liberal Arts school. In spite of the small college status, NAIA Div. I teams like Georgetown are very competitive with NCAA Div. 1, 2, 3 teams. Each year, Georgetown's schedule includes games and victories with teams from each of the divisions mentioned above. The NAIA has attracted many outstanding foreign players who have helped increase the level of play. For example, the player of the year in our conference was a 23 year old, freshman who had played professional soccer in Brazil.


MYTH #3: It is impossible to graduate in 4 years if you play college soccer.

FACT: his year the Georgetown College women's soccer team will graduate 6 seniors. All of these student/athletes are graduating in 4 years and have maintained 3.0 averages or above.


MYTH #4: Georgetown College is only for student athletes who are conservative Southern Baptists.

FACT: While the college does promote ethical decision making and has enjoyed a rich heritage of Baptist support, there are players on the team from many different backgrounds and traditions. This diverse mixture of beliefs is both respected and encouraged and creates a very healthy, open atmosphere for development as a young adults.


MYTH #5: Georgetown College is too expensive and no scholarship help is available.

FACT: The college values recruiting outstanding student/athletes and therefore financially supports the athletic programs, Academic and athletic scholarships are available for deserving prospective players. Depending on the student/athletes needs and academic credentials, financial packages are customized to make attending Georgetown very affordable.
