WCU late rally beats GC, while Tigers rally past AMU

Sean Williams and Chris Gilbody had a good start for Georgetown College baseball in its season opener Friday. The Tigers split the day with No. 6 William Carey University and Ave Maria University. Williams and Gilbody accounted for more than half GC hits and half the runs batted in.

WCU won 4-3 with two late runs in the eighth, while GC rallied in the seventh inning to beat AMU 6-3.

Williams was 3-of-5 on the day with an RBI, while Gilbody was 2-of-6 with two RBI.

The Tigers (1-1) started against the Crusaders. The home team took the early lead, but a double play ended a bigger scoring threat by WCU and fueled GC. Williams and Brandon Benson started the top of the fifth by getting on and setting the stage for Gilbody's two RBI single. Later in the inning Adryan Ramirez came around on Rodnee Little's single for a 3-1 advantage.

The Crusaders responded in the bottom of the fifth with a run and then the two in the eighth to win.

Georgetown scored first against Ave Maria, but the Gyrenes responded in the bottom half of the first. GC pushed ahead again in the top of the third and held that until runs in the fifth and six put AMU up 3-2.

Gilbody got the seventh – and final inning of the second game – off with a single. An error put two on with no outs for Antonio Monroy. His RBI single tied the game. A walk to John Shattles loaded the bases. A wild pitch scored Philip Tomasulo. Benson was hit by a pitch to reload the bases with two outs. Ryan Garner reached on an error which also allowed Shattles and Benson to score for the final total of victory.

Michael Koltak struck out the side to finish the game defensively.

Georgetown returns to action 1 pm Saturday against AMU and 4:30 pm against WCU.
