Grenadiers double score in ninth for 8-4 win

Georgetown College baseball came an inch from an epic rally, unfortunately, Indiana University Southeast made a leaping grab and then dropped a bomb in the top of the ninth.

The Grenadiers (21-7) led the entire way, but needed a two-out, bases loaded leaping snag of a liner toward left field to squelch the Tigers (16-11). IUS used that defensive momentum to score four runs on five hits to double its lead. GC got one back, but fell 8-4 Monday at Robert N. Wilson Field.

Josh Beams made the catch then started the top of the ninth. He popped out harmlessly in foul territory, but seven more Grenadiers dug in to pound out the win.

Early it was a pitcher's duel. Breion Barron worked himself out of several jams, while John Cecil went on cruise control, setting down 14 straight before Sean Williams singled with an out in the sixth.

Eight of the Tigers hits came from the sixth inning on, after starting the game with two hits in the first inning.

IUS finally scratched a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth to knock Barron out of the game. He pitched five and a third innings scattering seven hits and allowing three runs. He finished with four strikeouts and two walks.

Richard Escobedo finished the sixth and gave way to Javier De La Torre. He went two and two-thirds before the Grenadiers finally were able to start hitting again.

Offensively, Rodnee Little, Phillip Tomasulo and John Shattles led with two hits each. Chris Gilbody, Williams, Antonio Monroy and Brandon Benson each had a hit.

Former Tiger Nicholas Lugo did a lot of damage for the visitors. He had three hits on four plate appearances with a walk and three runs scored. Three other Grenadiers finished with two hits each.

Georgetown's game Tuesday on the road with Brescia University has been canceled. Next up for the Tigers is a Mid-South Conference road series with University of the Cumberlands. Game one is set for Friday. First pitch at 6 pm.
