Tigers pound out 17-2 win over Phoenix

For seven innings, Georgetown College baseball seemed to be in a typical dog fight with three-time national champion Cumberland University. However, the No. 21 Tigers (29-9, 4-3) erupted for 12 runs in the final two innings on their way to a 17-2 dominating victory.

Chris Gilbody hit a grand slam, Nick Giambalvo and Shota Usuda each hit two-run home runs to account for eight of those late runs.

Tyler Wagner led the day from the plate with four hits in his five plate appearances with three runs scored and two RBI. Giambalvo had four hits in six appearances with one RBI and three runs scored. Usuda went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Gilbody was the final Tiger with multiple hits, getting two in six at bats. He had four RBI and two runs scored.

Georgetown opened the game with four runs in the first to put a strangle hold on the game, never relinquishing control with Bryan Torres on the mound. He went seven innings, scattering four hits with four strikeouts and four walks. The Phoenix (22-15, 7-3) touched him up in the six for two runs, but that is all he or the Tiger pitching staff would allow.

Brandon Krennrich finished the day off with two innings of one hit ball. He walked one and struck out six.

Wagner got his day started with a two-RBI double, proving to be the winning runs as GC had a 3-0 lead at that point. He scored the fourth run of the inning off a single by Usuda.

Along with the three home runs, Georgetown managed four doubles – Wagner with two, Gilbody, Joseph Wall and Val Stammler.

These two teams play a doubleheader to finish off the weekend Mid-South Conference series. First pitch is set for 1 pm ET.
