Tigers take series with Saints

Georgetown College baseball played the rubber match Sunday against Thomas More University. The Tigers (11-8, 2-1) got some timely hitting and a great pitching performance to secure a 5-1 victory over the Saints (4-12-1, 1-2).

It was the long ball that ignited the visitors. They had three clear the fence for four of their runs. However, the star of the day was pitcher Kyle Fieger.

The senior threw an eight-inning gem, surrendering one unearned run, striking out five and only walking one. Keon Taylor came in and close it out to secure the victory for Georgetown.

The offense got going early when Randy Schab led off with a single, advanced to third on a perfectly executed hit and run by David Rojas and scored on a Ryan Gaynor sacrifice fly to left field. This gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. It was all extra base hits from here.

Eric Thrower hit a solo shot to highlight the fourth, while it was a JJ Duarte double followed by Nick Giambalvo's homerun to right for a 4-0 GC lead at the end of the fifth.

The Saints came back with a run of the own in the sixth when Mike Newsom singled into shallow center to score Bailey Martin. Georgetown got the run back in the top of the ninth, when Duarte hit a solo shot to straight away center for the final run of the game. He finished with four hits – three for extra bases – two doubles and a homerun.

Georgetown has a week at home, starting with a non-conference 4 pm Thursday game against Point Park. The team then hosts its first MSC series as Cumberland University (9-10, 2-1) comes to town.
