Asbury holds off rally to beat GC

Georgetown College baseball has been waiting a long time for opening day. After being shutdown early in the 2020 campaign, the Tigers needed to wait a bit longer for 2021 to start as winter weather wreaked havoc on the schedule.

Saturday, while the result is not what they wanted – a 7-5 loss, but being on the field again felt like a win.

GC gave up three first-inning runs to Asbury University on a neutral site in Hoover, Ala. The Eagles (5-0) added another two in the third for a 5-1 lead.

Georgetown scored four runs in the fourth-sixth innings, but the rally was not enough. AU's pitching staff shut the Tigers down to take the win.

Justin Brodt had a strong start in Orange & Black. The sophomore went 3-for-4 from the plate scoring a run and drawing a walk. Luke Turino drove in two runs off his one hit and also scored a run. Joshua Duarte, Nicholas Dilorenzo and Trey Eden all had RBIs. Dilorenzo, Christian Santillanes and Isaiah Bumgarner also crossed the plate for the Tigers.

Isaac Olson pitched three innings, striking out seven and walking just two with two earned runs. Byran Golnick went the final five innings, scattering four hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

The two teams finish off the weekend series with a doubleheader Sunday.
