Baseball drops game 2 of opening doubleheader
After committing 4 errors in the opener against Milligan, Georgetown was looking for a turnaround to salvage an opening doubleheader split. Milligan's offense proved too strong as it scored 7 times in the last 2 innings for a 10-3 win.
Chad Baker was on the bump to start the game and found trouble immediately. Baker hit the leadoff batter and gave up a 2-run homer as Milligan took a 2-0 lead just 3 batters into the game. With runners at the corners, Milligan tried a double steal, but Luis Sosa was ready at short and fired a bullet to Jacob VonThaden behind the plate to cut down the run and end the inning. Baker allowed just 1 more run in 4 innings of work on 96 pitches.
He was let off the hook for a potential loss in the top of the 5th. After 2 strikeouts, Georgetown got to work. Jacob VonThaden singled to center. Avery Bowens came into run and took 2nd after a bad pickoff throw. Luis Sosa followed with a walk to set the stage for Keano Suarez. The Tiger outfielder found a pitch to hammer and did not miss in smashing a ball over the right field wall to tie the game at 3.
Milligan answered right back against Chris Lenocker. The Tiger reliever gave up a single and double to start the inning with the former coming home to put Milligan back in the lead. Lenocker then threw a pickoff away to move the runner to 3rd. A fielder's choice brought another run home to give Milligan a 5-3 lead after 5.
Georgetown had chances in the top of the 6th to come back. Jose Cazorla started with a double to left. He moved to 3rd on a Nolan Smith single. Smith gave way to Braden Shepherd, who stole 2nd. The momentum ended there as Cazorla and Shepherd were stranded after back-to-back strikeouts to end the top of the 6th.
Milligan seized the momentum and exploded with 7 hits and 5 runs in the bottom of the inning to blow the game wide open. Georgetown mustered nothing in the top of the 7th to bring the game to an end.
The offense struggled all day long, striking out 14 times against the Milligan staff. Chris Lenocker took the loss after allowing 6 hits and 6 runs in just 1.1 innings of work.
The teams will go again in a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 1:00pm.
