Tigers turn early turnovers into points for 24-7 win over SAU

Georgetown College football scored on its first three possessions. The game became a stalemate from there, but the Tigers (2-1) picked up a 24-7 win Friday under the lights at Toyota Stadium.

GC forced St. Andrews University into three straight fumbles, leading to 17 points. The second play from scrimmage was ripped lose and recovered by Jack Sutkamp on the Knights (1-2) 37. Four plays later, Kyree Hawkins scampered 27 yards for a 7-0 start.

Kacey Otto lost his second fumble on the second play of the next drive, this time recovered by Ryan Woolf on the SAU 25. Three plays later Nick Conley rushed around the end for a 22-yard score.

The ensuing kickoff was botched, putting Georgetown's offense back in business on the opponent's 23.

This time the Knights stood tall and held the Tigers to a 33-yard field goal with 7:42 left in the first quarter.

It became a difficult night for both teams from there. Each managed a single score the rest of the game and fumbled the ball seven more times. In all, St. Andrews fumbled seven times – five became turnovers; while Georgetown coughed it up three times – all three were lost.

There were several turnovers on downs and a lot of penalties. For the game each team had eight, but of the 16 total fouls – 10 of them were in the third quarter.

Georgetown managed just 74 rushing yards and 161 passing, while allowing 187 yards on the ground to the Knights and 61 through the air.

SAU's rushing touchdown with 4:47 remaining, halted a streak of seven straight quarters of shutting out opponents at home in 2018.

The Tigers return to action 1:30 pm Sept. 22 at Keiser University in Florida. It is the inaugural home opener for the KU, in its first season of football.
