Tigers tally big win on Senior Day

Georgetown College football sent its seniors off in style, collecting a 31-8 win over Campbellsville University on a rainy Saturday at Toyota Stadium.

The No. 20 Tigers (6-3, 3-2) have flirted with huge wins against ranked opponents this season – all three loses are to teams in the Top 10. However, offensively or defensively something has not completely clicked all season.

Not surprising when 2017's senior day saw 30 players graduate from a team a touchdown away from the semifinals.

"Remember a year ago we had 30 seniors," said GC coach Bill Cronin. "That's a big void everywhere on offense and defense. It takes time. Credit our seniors for kind of getting us started on the right track. It's great to see them starting to gel a little bit and show that leadership."

It all came together Saturday. The Tigers tallied up more than 400 yards, mostly through the air, while nearly pitching a shutout.

Hunter Krause threw for 330 yards and three touchdowns. Shawn Gilliam was one of his favorite targets – 119 yards and a score. Ross Cox had 102 yards on his senior day.

"Gilly made a big difference today. He's hard to cover, and teams just don't see it coming," Cronin said about Gilliam. "We haven't used the tight end a whole lot in the past."

Senior Germell Jenkins turned in an impressive defensive effort with seven tackles to lead Georgetown. Landon Corolla and Robert Sheffield each had six.

Campbellsville managed just eight first downs and 202 yards of total offense. The CU Tigers (3-5, 2-2) scored their only points just shy of five minutes into the fourth quarter. The visitors had a 16-play drive that covered 65 yards and eat up nearly eight minutes for their eight points.

Georgetown responded with a drive that drained the rest of the clock as the home team ran the clock out.

GC finishes regular season play with a trip to Cincinnati Christian University 1:30 pm Nov. 3. Then the Tigers must wait to see how all the teams above them do on if a postseason bid might be in their future.

"We're right on the bubble of maybe making that playoff, and I think we'd be a pretty good football team at that point," Cronin said.
