Tigers get back to winning ways on Homecoming

Georgetown College football ended a two-game road skid by returning to Toyota Stadium for Homecoming. The crowd was electric and the team fed off the energy in a 27-17 win.

It started with two GC fumbles on the first two drives, but it was a Thomas More University turnover that sealed it.

The Saints (3-4, 2-2) had scored midway through the fourth for a 24-17 game. The No. 20 Tigers (5-2, 2-2) went three and out going backward a yard on the ensuing possession. TMU looked in good position to capitalize on the momentum and tie the game.

Step in Rob Sheffield. On the second play from scrimmage, the senior defensive back read the play and picked the pass. Thomas More did not threaten again and Georgetown used 11 plays to set up the final score of the game. Josh Edwards kicked his second field goal of the day, this one from 26-yards out. The drive drained more than five minutes off the clock.

The Tigers defense forced five turnovers – four interceptions and a fumble. Along with Sheffield, making the picks were Chad Holleran, Payton Standifer and DJ White. Sander Roksvag recovered the fumble.

Georgetown did not have any more miscues after its first two possessions.

Dylan Hughes had two big touchdown grabs. His first gave the Tigers the lead for good. Aaron Maggard took the backward pitch, set and threw a strike to Hughes between two defenders for a 42-yard score.

Brandon Burgess found the speedster early in the fourth on a 73-yard, strike and 24-10 game.

GC plays its final regular season road game 1:30 pm Saturday at Campbellsville University.
