Tigers offensive explosion aids in rival win

Georgetown College football scored twice in 21 seconds, helping to ice away a home victory Saturday. The Tigers (7-2, 4-2) turned two fumbles into quick strikes against University of the Cumberlands in a 28-7 win.

The day started with GC marching the field, scoring on a 12-play drive that covered 75-yards and ate up more than six minutes. The next possession it was a two-play, quick score that covered 40 yards – 38 of which came on a Brandon Burgess to Jake Johnson touchdown pass.

Drive three seemed headed in the same direction when Tucker Woolum dropped a sure touchdown and then the offense stalled. That is until the defense provided some highlights. It started late in the second quarter when a Tiger turnover looked to aid the Patriots (6-3, 3-3). UC was hoping to put some points up on the board and avoid a shutout in the first half.

However, a fumble recovered by Rob Sheffield set up a five-play, 67-yard drive for a three-score lead. The first play from scrimmage for Cumberlands was a fumble, recovered by Rafeal Rhone. Only thing that stopped the senior from scoring was an inadvertent whistle. So the offense, with 17 seconds left in the half, made it a quick one-play strike as Burgess found Johnson again to go up by four touchdowns.

The Patriots finally got on the board with a steady drive midway through the third, but that would be all the scoring either team would do.

Jonny Bothen led the defense with 11 tackles, while Burgess threw for 228 yards in just more than two quarters work. His favorite target was Johnson – three catches 103 yards.

Jalen Lumpkin put the home team on the board with a one-yard plunge, and Aaron Maggard scored the third touchdown for the Tigers.

Georgetown wraps up regular season play 1:30 pm Saturday hosting Cumberland University.
