Bears scratch Tigers in doubleheader

It was a cold night for most of the Tigers Thursday in Portsmouth, Ohio. The women's basketball team had a slow start as the No. 7 Shawnee State Bears raced out to a double-digit lead and never looked back. Grace White paced Georgetown College with nine points. Lauren Boblitt added eight, while Lexi Taylor and Maddie Burcham came off the bench with seven each.

On the men's side, the No. 6 Tigers were hot from deep – hitting 12 threes. Derrin Boyd had half of those and Carson Newsome chipped in with four makes. Those two paced GC with 26 and 22 points respectively. However, it was a late three by the Bears that lifted the home team to a 74-73 win.

Women's stat highlights:

  • Grace White: nine points, seven rebounds, four assists
  • Lauren Boblitt: eight points, three rebounds
  • Maddie Burcham: seven points on three-of-three shooting, five rebounds
  • Lexi Taylor: seven points on three-of-three shooting and one-of-one at the line

Men's stat highlights:

  • Derrin Boyd: 26 points, six threes
  • Carson Newsome: 22 points, 10 rebounds
  • Kyran Jones: 14 rebounds
  • Jaquay Wales: eight assists

Up next for both Tiger teams is a road doubleheader Saturday against Thomas More University. Women are set to tip at 4 pm with the men following sometime around 6:30 pm.
