No. 17 Georgetown Runs Win Streak to Eight

McKENZIE, Tenn. - From the opening tip-off on Saturday, Jan. 22, No. 17 Georgetown College controlled its game at Bethel University en route to an 80-62 Mid-South Conference men's basketball victory. Looking for their eighth-straight victory, the Tigers were quicker than the Wildcats, more aggressive and shot the lights out at Bethel's Crisp Arena in the first half.

Georgetown (16-2, 9-2 MSC) made 11-of-21 first half 3-pointers, while Bethel (10-10, 2-10 MSC) was 0-for-12 in the opening half from deep. The Tigers opened the game on a 10-2 run that included eight points from Derrin Boyd, including two 3-pointers. The quick start set the tone for a scintillating first half from the Tigers. By the first media timeout, the GC advantage was 24-8, and the lead reached 20 on a layup from Seth Johnson with 9:12 remaining. Georgetown closed the half with five straight points to enter halftime with a 53-24 lead. The result was never in doubt in the second half. Georgetown quickly pushed its lead out to 31 points on a pair of occasions, and the lead remained greater than 20 for most of the stanza. Bethel cut the margin down to 16 points late, but the Tigers were able to quell the rally and hang on for the 80-62 win.

Boyd finished with 18 points, and he was one of four Tigers to score in double digits. Drew Lamont added 14, and Johnson and Kyran Jones each pitched in 11. Jones reeled in seven boards, and Jaquay Wales dished up five assists in the win.

Georgetown's game shooting percentages cooled after that blistering first half, but were still very solid for the contest. The Tigers finished the day 30-for-66 (45.5%) from the floor, 13-for-31 (41.9%), and 7-for-11 (63.6%) from the free throw line. Georgetown out-rebounded Bethel 42-36 in the game as well.

The Tigers will return home Monday, Jan. 24 at 6 p.m. to host No. 10 Thomas More University in a makeup game, and then again on Thursday, Jan. 27 against Pikeville (13-4, 6-3 MSC) at 8 p.m. as part of a five-game home stand in Davis-Reid Alumni Gymnasium.
