No. 13 Georgetown Dominates UPike at Home

Just two minutes and 13 seconds into their men's basketball game with the University of Pikeville on Thursday night, Georgetown College junior Drew Lamont buried a long range missile to give the Tigers an early lead and it never changed.

Georgetown (16-3, 9-3 MSC) bounced back from a tough loss on Monday night with a convincing 86-67 win on Thursday over UPike (14-4, 7-3 MSC), which is right on the Tigers' heels in the Mid-South Conference standings.

Georgetown had to battle to stretch its lead out as Pikeville hung in the game early. The Tigers scored their first 12 points from beyond the arc on makes from Kyran Jones, Lamont, Jaquay Wales, and Lamont a second time, and with 16:20 to play in the opening half, the Tigers led 12-5. With 8:11 left on the clock, Cam Brooks-Harris pushed the Tigers' lead to 10 at 28-18, and Georgetown led by at least seven for the remainder of the half enroute to a 40-32 halftime.

Pikeville battled back within five points three times early in the second stanza, and eventually pulled as close as 47-43, but a 3-pointer from Derrin Boyd with 16:09 quelled the Bears' building momentum and ensured the Tigers remained in the driver's seat. Less than three minutes later, Boyd connected from downtown again, restoring the 10-point margin and igniting a 10-2 run that pushed the Georgetown's advantage to 64-49 with 10:55 to play.

Jones notched his 10th double double of the season with 20 points and a dozen rebounds, and Boyd led the Tigers with 22 points. Brooks-Harris (16) and Wales (12) also scored in double-figures, Boyd had five assists, and Wales dished out four dimes.

As a team, the Tigers made 32-of-58 (55.2%) shots in the game, including 13-of-24 (52.4%) from 3-point range. At the charity stripe, the Tigers were 9-for-11 (81.8%) in the contest. Georgetown dominated the glass, 33-21, and Georgetown used the fast break to great effect, outsourcing Pikeville on the run 13-2.

The Tigers will look to continue their recent hot streak - Georgetown has won nine of their last 10 games - on Saturday when they welcome a long-standing MSC rival to Davie-Reid Alumni Gymnasium. The Tigers will battle the University of the Cumberlands (13-7, 7-5 MSC) in a rivalry that dates back to the 1960-61 season. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
