Men's Hoops Falls at No. 8 Thomas More

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. - The Georgetown College men's basketball team entered play on Thursday night knowing that they needed a victory and help from others in the Mid-South Conference to reclaim the second seed in the conference standings heading into their regular season finale on Saturday. The Tigers got neither the help they were looking for, nor the win, so for the moment, the Tigers remain third in the MSC.

Thomas More (24-3, 18-2 MSC) completed the sweep of Georgetown (22-6, 15-6 MSC) by taking a big lead early and never looking back on their way to the 85-59 win.

Georgetown's Derrin Boyd scored first, but TMU answered with a 14-2 run that helped the Saints open a double-digit lead less than five minutes into the game. Georgetown did score to cut the deficit to eight, but another long TMU run - this one a 14-3 spurt - helped the Saints open a 28-9 lead and the Saints cruised into halftime with the lead, 43-20.

In the second half, the Tigers were unable to make a meaningful dent in the halftime gap, the Tigers were unable to close the gap to fewer than 21 points in the opening 10 minutes, as TMU kept the Tigers at arm's length. Twice with just less than 10 minutes left, Georgetown closed to within 19, but TMU pushed their lead out to as many as 35 points on their way to the 85-59 victory.

Boyd led all scorers with 29 points in the game, and he was 10-for-20 from the field, 4-for-5 from long range, and 5-for-6 from the foul line. Michael Turay scored 14 in the game, and Cam Brooks-Harris added seven, but no one else for the Tigers scored more than three points. Kyran Jones did haul in 11 boards to lead all players in the game.

As a team, Georgetown made 22 of 61 (36.1%) shots in the game, but only 4 of 16 (25%) from long distance. At the foul line, the Tigers were 11-for-14 (78.6%). The difference in the game, though, was TMU shot 56% (31-for-53) from the floor and 58% (15-for-26) from deep.

The postseason seeding situation for the Tigers entering their final regular season contest is simple: Georgetown will be the number two seed if they can beat Shawnee State University (15-13, 9-12 MSC) on Saturday and if Cumberland University is able to beat the University of Tennessee Southern in Lebanon, Tennessee. Those two results would lead to a head-to-head tie between Georgetown and UT-Southern with a season series split, and the Tigers would earn the tiebreaker based on a season sweep of Cumberland. Any other set of results from those two games would put UT-Southern in the two seed and Georgetown on the three line.

Saturday's game against Shawnee State will also be senior day for the Tigers. The game is slated to tip-off at 4 p.m. Eastern.
