Tigers rout Bulldogs

After a slow first 4 minutes that saw Wilberforce take a 19-8 lead over Georgetown, the Tigers responded with an 18-0 run and never looked back en route to a 102-67 win. Georgetown (18-3, 12-3) took the early shots from a Wilberforce (1-19, 0-15) team that employed a full court pressing style of defense from the opening tap. Head Coach Chris Briggs called a 30-second timeout once the deficit reached 7-0 just 36 seconds into the game, trying to get his team going. It still took the Tigers some time to get going as the lead grew to 19-8 just under 4 minutes into the game. A 3-point play from Kyran Jones finally got Georgetown on track and set the Tigers on the 18-0 run. The run would be capped by a Seth Johnson three, leading to the under-12 media timeout and a 26-19 Georgetown lead. Wilberforce was able to score soon out of the timeout, ending a 5-minute scoring drought for the Bulldogs. Georgetown answered with 7 more unanswered points to take a 33-21, making the overall run 25-2 in favor of GC. With the score at 45-37 Georgetown, the Tigers went on an 11-2 run over the final 4 minutes of the 1st half to take a 56-39 lead into the break. Despite the slow start, Georgetown shot 61% in the half and 14-18 from the foul line. The pressing style of Wilberforce had been figured out by the Tigers and once the game got into the half court, GC was able to break down the defense with ease for most of the night.

After a balanced scoring attack in the 1st half for Georgetown, Jake Ohmer asserted himself early in the 2nd half to salt the game away. Ohmer only played an early 7 minute stretch in the 2nd half but knocked down 4 of 5 three point shots, en route to a 14-point half and a game-high 23 points, along with 7 assists and 6 rebounds. The Tigers did slow down offensively in the 2nd half, shooting 47%, but the defense took the Bulldogs out of any comeback hope. Wilberforce shot just 38% in the 2nd half and missed all 10 of its 3-point attempts.

Seth Johnson finished the game with 14 points in 23 minutes off the bench, while Rashad Bishop added 13 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 huge first half dunks in just 16 minutes of action. Drew LaMont also added 13 off the bench, and Kyran Jones finished the night with 12 points and 9 rebounds.

The win also moved Georgetown into a tie for 1st place in the Mid-South Conference with Freed-Hardeman, as the Lions were upset by Pikeville, putting both Georgetown and Freed-Hardeman at 12-3 in the league. The next game for Georgetown? A road trip to Freed-Hardeman this coming Thursday night at 8:30pm ET. If Georgetown wins, they will take sole possession of 1st place, and sweep the season series, giving GC the tiebreaker over FHU going into the MSC Tournament in late February.
