Georgetown holds off Lourdes to advance to 2nd Round

Georgetown's defense set the tone against Lourdes in the 1st round of the 2023 NAIA Men's Basketball National Championship, presented by Ballogy. The Tigers held Lourdes to 5-26 shooting in the first half and made enough key defensive plays late to hold off the Gray Wolves for a 67-58 win to advance to the 2nd round.

Back-to-back 3s from Cam Brooks-Harris and Drew LaMont got Georgetown out to a quick 6-0 lead. The lead would grow to 15-5 with 12:04 left in the 1st half, thanks to a Jake Ohmer 3-pointer. The Gray Wolves would fight back to get within 18-11, before the Tigers went on a 16-4 run to close the half. In doing so, the Tigers D held Lourdes scoreless for over 6 minutes as the half wound down. By the time the Gray Wolves hit 2 free throws, the margin was 28-13 with just over 2 minutes left in the half. Another 3 from Ohmer, a lay-in from Jabrion Spikes, and a free throw from Rashad Bishop powered the Tigers to a 34-15 halftime lead.

The Gray Wolves would regroup. After a 5-26 1st half, Lourdes made 4-5 to start the 2nd half on a 9-2 run. 2 inside baskets from Ohmer and a jumper from Brooks-Harris pushed the lead up to 17 at 42-25 with 15:42 to go. After a Jaquay Wales layup with 14:12 to go and a 44-28 lead, the Tigers went scoreless for nearly 4 minutes. In that time, Lourdes went on a 10-0 run to close within 6 at 44-38 with just over 10 minutes to go. Moments later, Rashad Bishop slammed home a missed Ohmer 3 to push the lead back to 11, and send the nearly-capacity Davis-Reid Alumni Gym crowd into a frenzy. Another huge dunk from Bishop at the 7:32 mark kept the Tigers lead at 10. Lourdes kept fighting back and with 6:25 to go, cut the deficit to 6 once more at 54-48. Bishop to the rescue. A third monstrous dunk off an Ohmer lob forced Lourdes into a timeout to try to take the crowd out of the game.

Lourdes would not go away though. With 3:13 to go, Little Anderson knocked down a 3 to bring his team within 4 at 57-53. The Tigers countered with a corner 3 from Brooks-Harris to provide breathing room. Lourdes answered with a quick 2 with 2:35 to go. The score stood 60-55, Georgetown. After a Tiger turnover, Lourdes had a clean look at a 3 that missed. Georgetown hit 1-2 free throws to go up 6 with 2:03 to go. Lourdes answered as Anderson brought his team back within 4 with 1:41 to go. Bishop to the rescue again. A tip-in off a missed 3 gave the Tigers a 6-point lead with 1:25 left. The Tigers defense finished the game off as Lourdes missed its final 5 shots of the night. Georgetown knocked down enough free throws late for the 9-point win.

Rashad Bishop's 2nd half played a major factor in the Tigers holding on. The Louisville native had 11 points and 6 rebounds in the half, en route to a 14 and 9 night. Jake Ohmer struggled with his shot but still led the team with 16 points. Cam Brooks-Harris finished with 9 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Georgetown advances to the 2nd round of the 2023 NAIA Men's Basketball National Championship and will take on Indiana Wesleyan, who knocked off MidAmerica Nazarene, 78-70, earlier in the day at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym. Tipoff for Wednesday's 2nd round game is set for 7:00pm ET at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym. The winner advances to Kansas City and the round of 16.
