Tigers crush Dragons in season opener

The 5th-ranked Georgetown Men's Basketball Tigers kicked off the 2023-24 season against Virginia University of Lynchburg on Sunday at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym. Feeling confident after a strong showing in the exhibition at Kentucky, the Tigers took it to the undersized Dragons from the start and never trailed in a 107-51 rout.

Tae Dozier started the day off with a 3-pointer, followed moments later by a huge slam from Cam Brooks-Harris to quickly put GC up by 5. Consecutive dunks from Rashad Bishop later in the half put the Tigers up 18-8. Bishop added a 3rd dunk moments later and Georgetown took a 22-8 lead with 11:47 left in the half. The Dragons stayed within reach and cut the deficit to 31-21 with 6:11 left in the half. Georgetown responded with a 14-2 run to close out the half with a 45-23 lead.

After committing 10 first-half turnovers, Head Coach Chris Briggs felt the team needed more energy in its game in the second half and his team responded. Georgetown came roaring out of the gates, holding the Dragons scoreless over the first 5:05 of the half. In total, the Tigers started the 2nd half on a 27-2 run to rocket out to a 72-25 lead with 13:40 to go. The lead kept growing from there as every Tiger on the roster saw playing time, with 14 Tigers getting into the scoring column by the end of the day. No Tiger played more than 20 minutes.

Rashad Bishop led the Tigers with 17 points on 8-8 shooting, with 4 rebounds and 3 blocks in 20 minutes. Cam Brooks-Harris finished with 14, while Jabrion Spikes added 11 off the bench. The Tigers shot 58% from the floor for the game.

The team hits the road next weekend starting with a game at Baker (KS) on Friday night with a tipoff time of 8:00pm ET.
