Tigers beat Southeastern, pick up 1,999th NAIA win
Georgetown Men's Basketball has been the winningest in NAIA history for many years. The Tigers are nearing another milestone. After a 73-59 win over Southeastern on Saturday, Georgetown is one win away from becoming the first program to amass 2,000 NAIA wins.
A jumper from Jaquay Wales and a dunk from Cam Brooks-Harris in the first 53 seconds of the game set the tone as Georgetown never trailed in its opening game in The Show in Kingsport, TN. A dunk from Rashad Bishop with 12:37 to go in the half gave Georgetown its first double-digit lead at 19-9. A Jabrion Spikes jumper followed, forcing the Fire into a timeout. Aden Nyekan came on with consecutive layups to keep the Fire at bay. Georgetown led by 20 twice in the half, ultimately taking a 47-30 to the break. The trio of Bishop, Spikes, and Nyekan were a combined 13-13 from the floor with 26 points. The Tigers shot 21-25 inside the arc. The only Tiger with minimal impact in the half was Kyran Jones, who picked up 2 fouls in just 7 minutes of action.
Jones made his presence felt in the 2nd half. He amassed 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 steals after halftime. The Tigers' offense slowed down dramatically in the 2nd half. GC shot just 30% and missed all 10 of its 3-point shots. The defense remained strong though, limiting the Fire to just 36% in the half, negating any hopes of a comeback.
Georgetown dominated in points off turnovers (19-6) and points in the paint (36-20) in taking down the Fire. The Tigers will go for the program's 2000th NAIA win on Sunday against Reinhardt. Tipoff in Kingsport, TN is set for 2:30pm.
