Spikes scores 19 to lead Tigers past Harriers
Jabrion Spikes scored 19 points in just 20 minutes off the bench to lead 3rd-ranked Georgetown to a 95-60 over Miami-Hamilton on Wednesday night at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym. The win pushed the Tigers to an 11-2 start to the season.
Georgetown came out blazing on offense, knocking down its first 6 shots from the floor, but the Harriers were up to the task early as they hit 6 of their first 7 to take an early 15-12 lead. A dunk from Rashad Bishop and free throws from Kyran Jones ultimately put the Tigers ahead for good in the game, but Miami-Hamilton continued to fight for much of the first half. With 7:46 to go in the half, the Harriers' Ryder Thompson hit a corner 3 to bring his team within 26-22 and put pressure on the Tigers. It would prove to be the last Harrier points for 7 minutes, 9 seconds as Georgetown erupted with a 20-2 run, including 18 straight to close the first half with a 46-24 lead. In the Georgetown 18-0 run, Miami-Hamilton went 0-9 from the floor with 5 turnovers. Conversely, the Tigers went 6-9 in the run, getting 3 three-pointers from Cam Brooks-Harris. A Seth Johnson layup closed out a first half in which Georgetown shot 65% from the field and 6-10 from beyond the arc.
The Tigers slowly built on the lead throughout the 2nd half thanks to dominant inside play (13-18 2-point shooting) and numerous trips to the foul line as the smaller Harriers began to fatigue as the 2nd half wore on. The Tigers shot 14-18 from the foul line in the half. The half was also where Jabrion Spikes did the bulk of his damage, scoring 15 on 7 of 8 shooting, including a 3-pointer that was launched 5 feet behind the line. He also grabbed 3 offensive rebounds in the half and was able to capitalize on those to keep Georgetown in command. In total, Georgetown grabbed 14 offensive rebounds, while Miami-Hamilton grabbed 16 total rebounds. GC's defending was also clean throughout the night as Miami-Hamilton did not attempt a single free throw the entire game.
Spikes was one of five Tigers in double-figures by night's end. Cam Brooks-Harris finished with 15 points and 2 steals. Rashad Bishop lived above the rim most of the night and ended with 16. Isaiah Mason had an efficient night on both ends, scoring 14 while pulling down 5 rebounds and added 2 assists and 2 steals. Kyran Jones tallied 10 points, 6 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 assists and a steal in just 17 minutes.
Georgetown's next home game comes on Thursday night against Carolina Christian with a 7:00pm tip time.
