Bench scores 49 points in win over Campbellsville
After a staggering 71 bench points in Saturday's win at Bethel, Georgetown got another strong outing from the super subs. 49 bench points came on Thursday as Georgetown withstood a strong 2nd half effort from Campbellsville for an 82-71 win.
Both teams got off to strong defensive starts. The game was tied 7-7 six minutes into the game. Kyran Jones laid a ball in with 13:47 to go to give Georgetown a 9-7 lead. Tommy Thomas would hit the next points but it would not come until the 12:17 mark to give Georgetown a 12-7 lead. The scoring didn't pick up until Seth Johnson entered the game midway through the half. The guard came out firing from downtown. After making just 7 threes all season coming in, Johnson went a scorching 4-4 in the first half alone. The trio of Johnson, Tae Dozier and Isaiah Mason spurred a run that gave GC a 31-18 lead with just over 6 minutes to go. The lead slowly built and reached its peak with 17 seconds to go in the half on a 3-point play from Tommy Thomas to give the Tigers a 47-28 lead. Campbellsville answered with a basket just before the horn but still trailed Georgetown by 17 at the break.
In the 2nd half, Georgetown's offense began to sputter. A Rashad Bishop dunk with 16:46 to go put the lead at 51-36. It was the last made basket for Georgetown for over 5 minutes. In that time, Campbellsville had cut the lead down to 54-49, before Aden Nyekan ended the drought at the 11:17 mark. Nyekan would hit the next GC bucket but not until the clock showed 9:21. Throughout this slump, Campbellsville never got closer than 5. The offense finally got going thanks to Tae Dozier, who grabbed a missed 3 under the rim and went right back up for a slam to put GC ahead 63-56 with 6:04 to go. Dozier followed another missed shot with a basket on the next possession and then a 3-pointer on the 3rd possession and suddenly, Georgetown's lead was back up to 10 at 68-58 with 4:46 remaining. Campbellsville never got closer than 7 the rest of the way as Georgetown hit its free throws down the stretch for the 11-point win.
Seth Johnson led Georgetown with 14 points. After a rough few games, Tae Dozier came back to life with 11 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists in 21 minutes. Jabrion Spikes joined Dozier with 11 points. Rashad Bishop and Aden Nyekan each added 10. Kyran Jones was a force on the glass, pulling down 10 rebounds.
Georgetown now sets it sights on revenge as the Tigers travel to Lindsey Wilson on Saturday. Tip time is set for 4:00pm.
