Tigers go nuclear in 2nd half to blast #5 Cumberlands on Senior Day

There are games in which a team comes out strong. There are games in which a team comes out on fire, and then there is what Georgetown did in the 2nd half on Senior Day against Cumberlands. Nursing just a 4-point lead at the break. the Tigers made 15 of their 1st 16 shots and shot 73% for the entire half, en route to a 90-58 romp.

Georgetown honored its 5 seniors before the game. Cam Brooks-Harris, Jaquay Wales, Tommy Thomas, Chad Ohmer, and Kyran Jones all had their moment surrounded by family and friends. Early on, things looked like that might be the only smiles on the day for Georgetown. The Tigers missed their first 9 shots from the floor and trailed Cumberlands 10-0 before Tae Dozier finally ended the drought with 13:34 left in the half. It woke Georgetown up as Cam Brooks-Harris connected from beyond the arc on the very next possession. Cumberlands kept its pace up and led the Tigers, 15-7, midway through the half.

Chris Briggs turned to his bench and it delivered. Gavin Stevens came in with a basket inside, followed by an Isaiah Mason 3 and the Tigers chipped to within 15-12 with 8:56 on the clock. Tommy Thomas then came up with a 3 to get GC within 18-16 with 6:32 to go. Cumberlands immediately answered with a 3 of its own, but it was clear the Tigers had found their rhythm. Out of a timeout, Tae Dozier took a Jabrion Spikes steal the other way for a flying dunk. Kyran Jones scored twice inside in the next minute and Georgetown had its first lead at 22-21 with 3:40 still remaining. Jones scored again to push the lead to 3 and would later convert a 3-point play to give Georgetown a 29-25 lead with 87 seconds left until halftime. The lead stayed at 4 at the break.

Then the 2nd half happened. Georgetown defended and took the game into a track meet. Layups from Jabrion Spikes, 2 from Tommy Thomas and a rare 3-pointer from Kyran Jones gave Georgetown a 40-31 lead with 17:22 left and forced Cumberlands into a timeout. It did nothing to stem the tide. Two threes from Cam Brooks-Harris and a layup from Tae Dozier were all part of a 13-0 run that pushed the lead to 48-31 with 15:43 to go. The only missed shot of Georgetown's 1st 16 was grabbed by Isaiah Mason and converted for 2nd chance points. In the first 10 minutes of the half, Georgetown made 15-16 from the floor and outscored 5th-ranked Cumberlands, 35-12. With the lead there at 66-39, Georgetown refused to let up. The Tigers led by as many as 33 in the 2nd half as they shot a staggering 73% over the final 20 minutes, including 8-9 from beyond the arc.

With Jaquay Wales out, the 4 active seniors combined for 46 points. Kyran Jones was dominant on both ends, finishing with 17 points and 11 boards. Cam Brooks-Harris knocked down 4 threes, while Tommy Thomas ended with 11 points and 3 blocks. Chad Ohmer played 6 minutes in his home finale and scored late in the game.

The Tigers next head to Campbellsville on Thursday looking to improve its seeding ahead of the MSC Tournament. Tip time is set for 7:30pm.
