2nd half run leads Senior Day win

Georgetown honored 3 senior student-athletes and 1 manager before the regular season home finale against Campbellsville on Saturday. While it took time for Georgetown to assert itself, the orange & black were able to pull away in the 2nd half for an 80-61 win to improve to 24-2 on the year and remain atop the MSC standings.

Campbellsville got off to a quick start by taking a 6-2 lead. After a free throw, Jaquias Franklin dropped back-to-back threes to put Georgetown ahead, 9-6. Points were hard to come by for much of the half as Campbellsville did not break into double figures until the 12:10 mark, but only trailed by 2 at that point. Gavin Stevens hit on a 3 following a Campbellsville turnover for a 15-10 lead with 10:43 to go. Campbellsville countered with a three of its own just 23 seconds later to remain close. Georgetown came back with a basket from Aden Nyekan and a rare 3-pointer from Dre Boyd to take a 20-13 lead and force Campbellsville to call for time with 8:38 left in the half. Georgetown twice led by 9 in the half, the last coming with 5:49 to play. Campbellsville fought back with 10 straight points to take a 25-24 lead with less than 2 minutes on the clock. Georgetown came back with baskets inside from Andres Burney and a 3-point play from Jaquias Franklin. Campbellsville countered with a 3-point play of its own in the waning seconds as Georgetown took a 29-28 lead to halftime.

The first 7 minutes of the second half played out like the entire first half. Each team had runs and exchanges of baskets with droughts in between. With 12:55 to go, Gavin Stevens hit a clutch three to give Georgetown a 45-41 lead. Free throws from Jabrion Spikes and a jumper from Andres Burney pushed the lead to 8 with 11:28 left. Campbellsville cut the lead to 5 at the midway point, but Spikes soon came up with a big three-point play for a 52-44 lead. Georgetown got a stop and then another 3 from Stevens to take an 11-point lead with 9:15 to go and send Campbellsville to a timeout. It proved to be the last time Georgetown led by single digits. Campbellsville twice got within 10 but 4 free throws from Stevens pushed the lead to 63-49. Stevens nailed another 3 with 6 minutes left for a 14-point lead. After a CU miss, Jaquias Franklin led a fast break and threw a perfect lob to Dre Boyd for a slam and another CU timeout. Stevens hit another 3 with 4:29 to play to give Georgetown a 74-54 lead, sealing the win.

Gavin Stevens knocked down 5 of 10 three-pointers on the day to finish with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Jaquias Franklin scored 17 to go with 6 boards, 4 assists and 2 steals. Dre Boyd returned to action and finished with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Jabrion Spikes ended with 13 and Andres Burney had 11.

Georgetown now focuses on a road trip to Bethel as the next step towards a potential MSC regular season title. Tip time on Thursday is set for 8:30pm.
