Dozier, Tigers fly by Blue Raiders in MSC Quarterfinal
Georgetown's 2 regular season games against Lindsey Wilson were closer than anyone in orange and black anticipated. The Tigers won both but only by a combined 10 points. Sunday's MSC quarterfinal between the two proved a much different story. Georgetown held Lindsey Wilson to a season-low 50 points to cruise to the semifinals with a 23-point win.
The win wasn't looking like a sure thing to start. Lindsey Wilson jumped out to a 9-0 lead just 1:58 into the game as the Blue Raiders made their 1st 4 shots. Georgetown got on the board, but the Blue Raiders then hit a three to take a 12-3 lead at the 16:48 mark. A jumper from Dre Boyd and 3 from Jaquias Franklin started Georgetown's turnaround. It carried over to the defensive end as Lindsey Wilson began to struggle with shots. A three from Darien Lewis and another jumper from Boyd tied the game at 13 with 14:03 to go. Dre Boyd then gave Georgetown its 1st lead at 15-13 with 12:58 to play and was the bucket that put Georgetown ahead for good. After a Blue Raider free throw, Tae Dozier drilled a three to push Georgetown's lead to 4. Lindsey Wilson scored inside with 10:06 to go, snapping a stretch of nearly 7 minutes without a field goal, and cutting Georgetown's lead to 2. The Tiger defense then clamped down and shut out Lindsey Wilson for the next 7 minutes, 54 seconds of game time. The next Blue Raider points came with 2:12 to go. In that time, Georgetown rolled off 10 unanswered and had a 28-16 lead before that basket. A Dre Boyd dunk punctuated the half as Georgetown took a 32-20 lead to halftime.
Lindsey Wilson hit 5 of its 1st 6 shots to take the early 12-3 lead. Over the final 16:48 of the half, the Blue Raiders scored just 8 points and missed 18 of 20 shots from the field. In total, Georgetown held Lindsey Wilson to 7-26 shooting in the half. The Blue Raiders did themselves no favors as they shot just 4-11 from the free throw line.
The 2nd half saw Lindsey Wilson knock down early shots and cut Georgetown's lead to 9 at 38-29 with 16:50 to play. 2 jumpers from Aden Nyekan pushed the Tiger lead out to 13. After a LWC basket, Georgetown came back with a Tae Dozier dunk and off a steal from Darien Lewis, Jabrion Spikes threw one down as Lindsey Wilson called a timeout with 13:24 to go, trailing 46-31.
At the 8:38 mark, Lindsey Wilson scored inside to cut Georgetown's lead to 56-43. Over the next 5 minutes, 30 seconds, Georgetown outscored the Blue Raiders 13-2 to blow the game open. Lindsey's next field goal did not come until 2:05 remaining in the game and only cut the Tiger lead to 22. Jabrion Spikes capped off the night with less than a minute to go for the 73-50 final score.
Spikes finished the night with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Georgetown was most aided by a healthy Tae Dozier, who showed off his full talent with another strong two-way performance. The junior finished the night with 16 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 blocks. Andres Burney scored 11 off the bench. Dre Boyd finished with 10. The defense was the story as Lindsey Wilson shot just 29.8% for the game and committed 17 turnovers, which led to 22 Georgetown points. 12 of the 17 forced turnovers were steals. Dozier and Darien Lewis each had 4 takeaways.
Georgetown now prepares for a revenge matchup against Freed-Hardeman in the MSC semifinals. The Tigers will look to avenge 2 of its 3 regular season losses against the Lions. Tip off from Bowling Green is at 8:30pm ET on Monday.
