Sparks' golden goal lifts Tigers to win

Georgetown College men's soccer needed 15 more seconds against Thomas More University in the first conference meeting of these two schools less than an hour apart. A late goal by the Saints tied the game, forcing overtime Wednesday night.

Senior Logan Sparks netted the golden goal a quarter of a minute into the first extra session. After TMU took the ball into the attack, GC cleared it out. The ball bounced to the feet of Sparks who arched in a shot past a diving George Tidswell and a 2-1 Tiger win.

Georgetown (13-4) finishes Mid-South Conference play at 4-4. It is a bottle neck in the middle of the nine team league. Campbellsville University and University of the Cumberlands both sit at 4-3 with one game left. CU will face Cumberland University (3-4) while UC hosts Shawnee State University (2-4-1).

This creates the potential for either a three-way or a four-way tie. Looking at all scenarios it appears Georgetown will finish either fourth or fifth to play in the four-five game when MSC postseason begins Nov. 9 in Bowling Green, Ky. Semifinals are set for Nov. 10 with the finals Nov. 16 back in Bowling Green.

Georgetown leveled its conference record in the thrilling win over Thomas More (5-10-1, 0-7-1). It started with Noel Roman breaking up the 0-0 tie early in the second half. A corner kick restart bounded out of the box, but the Saints clear did not go very far. It landed at the feet of Roman who netted his 14th goal of the season.

TMU responded in the 83rd minute with a goal off a corner kick. This set the stage for Sparks' 11th goal and second game-winner.

The Tigers finish regular season play 6 pm Saturday hosting Midway University on Senior Night.
