Tigers blank Lions, advance to second round

Georgetown College men's soccer picked up a shutout victory for the fifth time this season and second against Freed-Hardeman University Tuesday evening. In the previous 15 seasons, the Tigers (11-5-1) best mark of shutout victories was four – which happened multiple times. In the decade and a half, this is the first time for five in a season.

It came in the opening round of the Mid-South Conference tournament as the eighth-seeded Tigers hosted the ninth-seeded Lions (7-10). The home team scored twice late in the half to eliminate the FHU, 2-0.

Mark Zimmerman scored the first goal in the 36th minute, while Diego Mora, off a pass from Seba Bocaz Canales, scored the insurance goal. The assist was Canales' 15th of the season, setting a new season record. Previously, Canales and Dave McIver each had 14 in a season at GC. McIver did it twice – 1997, 1995 – while Canales tallied 14 in his freshman year.

GC advances on to face top-seeded and No. 12 Lindsey Wilson College. The two tangled almost a month ago with the Blue Raiders winning 4-1, giving Georgetown it's first loss of the season.

This past spring, the Tigers won their first postseason game in more than a decade and played the top conference opponent in the second round to a 1-0 setback. GC will be looking to take the next step in the program by advancing to the semifinals of the tournament and winning a second postseason game.

Kickoff is set for 7 pm ET Friday in Columbia, Ky.
