Phoenix defending too much for Tigers

With several lineup changes over the previous few weeks, Georgetown has shifted to a more defensive tactic on the pitch. It paid dividends for most of the Tigers' match at Cumberland on Wednesday, but the Phoenix were up to the task defensively, limiting GC to just 1 shot on goal, en route to a 3-0 Cumberland win.

Georgetown faced an attack from the start by Cumberland as the Phoenix fired its first shot just 36 seconds into the match. Although the shot was wide of target, it set a tone for the rest of the half that the Tigers would need to be in top form. Shjon Ripy tallied 5 saves in the half on the 6 shots he faced. The other was a goal in the 38th minute to put the Phoenix ahead 1-0 at the half.

Georgetown's only shot on goal came in the 62nd minute as a header from Roberto Saer was turned away by Cumberland keeper, Jack McCarthy. Cumberland kept coming with shots and Georgetown kept sending them aside and away. The dam finally broke with exactly 10 minutes remaining as Philipp Schmidtke scored his 2nd of the day. Cumberland seized the momentum and added its 3rd goal just 44 seconds later, effectively ending any Tiger hopes of at least earning a point.

The Tigers will look to regroup on Monday at Toyota Stadium as they step out of conference to face Cincinnati-Clermont. Opening kick is set for 6:30pm.
