Mena's return sparks Tigers

Without Alejandro Mena in the starting 11 the last few matches, Georgetown was forced to switch to a more defensive style on the pitch, therefore limiting the Tigers' scoring punch. Mena returned to the starting squad on Monday and picked up where he left off with 2 goals as the Georgetown defeated Cincinnati-Clermont, 3-1.

The freshman striker looked confident early with a header in the 4th minute that just sailed wide of the goal, followed by a shot from distance in the 14th minute that went high. Mena finally broke through the Cougar back line in the 16th minute off a terrific pass from Nicolas del Aguila. Mena saw the keeper charging out and delivered a cheeky chip over the keeper and into the net for his 4th goal of the season. It would prove to be the only tally of the 1st half thanks to fine keeping from both sides the rest of the way. The Tigers' last best chance in the half came in the 39th minute off a free kick when Frederik Pederson's ball beat the UC-Clermont keeper but drilled the crossbar and stayed out.

UC-Clermont scored an equalizing goal off a counter-attack in the 60th minute, putting the Tiger faithful on edge at Toyota Stadium on this cool October night. It took less than 5 minutes for Georgetown to respond as Nicolas del Aguila found the ball on his foot in the box and put it away to put the Tigers back in front.

With the team energized, the defending went up as the Cougars only mustered 1 more shot the rest of the way, which was not on target. Being forced to press up for the equalizer, the Cougars left countering chances open and the Tigers took advantage as Mena broke free in the final minute and finished the breakaway with his 2nd goal of the night to seal the 3 points. Wyatt Roswall picked up his 1st point of the year with the assist.

Georgetown will look to take the momentum into Friday's massive fixture against Cumberlands. Kickoff at Toyota Stadium is set for 6:00pm.
