Smallwood's marathon win sends Tigers past Midway
Georgetown stepped out of MSC play on Thursday to battle Midway. The teams traded punches back-and-forth at the Lackey Tennis Center, but in the end, Logan Smallwood clinched a 4-3 win for the Tigers thanks to a thrilling 3-set win in the singles finale.
Smallwood played a big role early in the day as his 6-3 doubles win with Stephen Taylor clinched the doubles point for the Tigers after the teams split the first 2 doubles matches.
Maxcene Barriere opened singles play with a 6-3, 6-4 win, putting GC up 2-0 overall. Midway responded with 3 straight singles wins, putting them on the verge of the clinch. In #5 singles, Stephen Taylor rose to the occasion with a gutty 7-5, 7-5 win, evening the overall score at 3-3. It set the stage for a memorable finale.
Logan Smallwood took the court against the Eagles' Daniele Trentin. The match was tight from the start. Trentin took the opener, 6-4, as both teams looked on, knowing the stakes. Smallwood knew he was close in the first and used that to his advantage in the 2nd to even the match with a 6-3 win. The third set was what brought the house down. The players traded punches back-and-forth. Both had multiple break point chances, set point and match point chances and neither side would budge. Somehow, Smallwood found a crease late to take the 3rd set, 16-14 and clinch the team win for Georgetown.
The win was the final non-conference match of the season. GC will take on Cumberlands and Campbellsville to close out the regular season.
