Morrissey, Heinemann lead win in Arizona finale

After 2 tough games in Arizona against the #2 and #4 teams in the country, Georgetown got back on track with a 3-1 win over (RV) Arizona Christian.

The Firestorm came out blazing in the first set, hitting .571, with only 2 errors. Georgetown's offense was more than serviceable at .261 and kept the Tigers close, but ACU was just too good in the opening set and won it, 25-20. The Tigers used the set break to refocus it defense and the match completely flipped. The Tigers turned in a match-high 15 kills in the set and held ACU to a .077 hitting percentage. ACU led 13-11 but the Tigers responded with 4 unanswered and never trailed again in the set. 3 late kills from Liam Morrissey off Finn Heinemann assists gave the Tigers the room they needed to take set 2, 25-21, to even the match.

In set 3, ACU scored the 1st three points, but the Tigers chipped away as the set went on. With the set tied at 8, Georgetown went on a 7-2 run to break things open and gather breathing room. The lead stayed consistent the rest of the set as the Tigers hit a .455 clip, while ACU managed just 9 kills in the set, allowing Georgetown to cruise to a 25-18 win and a 2-1 lead in the match.

The 4th set proved similar to sets 2 and 3. The Tigers and Firestorm traded points and the lead through the early stages. With the set tied at 12, Georgetown went on a 6-2 run to take an 18-14 lead, with the final point coming on a combined block from Tyree Wesley and Finn Heinemann that forced ACU into a timeout. The Firestorm closed within 19-18, but the Tigers delivered the final haymaker with a 6-1 run to end the set, 25-19.

Liam Morrissey ended the night with a terrific all-around game: 16 kills, .333 hit %, 9 digs, and 5 block assists. Finn Heinemann paced the offense with 42 assists. Ryan Gunn and Tyler Chavez each recorded double-digit kills.

The Tigers return to Kentucky on Tuesday and will travel to Thomas More looking to stay perfect in the MSC. First serve is set for 6:00pm.
