Volleyball brushes away Maple Leafs
Men's Volleyball needed less than 90 minutes in its first game of Saturday to pick up another win. The Tigers swept Goshen, 25-18, 25-19, and 27-25, to improve to 4-1 on the season.
With Georgetown leading early 4-3, Finn Heinemann set up Tyree Wesley for a kill that sparked a run of 4 straight for Georgetown to push the lead to 8-3. Later in the set, the Tigers got another 4-point run, started by a kill from Jose Acuna Yepes and followed by 3 straight Goshen errors with Yepes on serve. The run gave Georgetown a 20-11 edge. Ultimately, Krzysztof Kowalski polished off the first set with a kill to give Georgetown the early advantage.
Set 2 saw Goshen score the 1st 2 points before Georgetown again tallied 4 straight. Goshen answered back with a 5-0 run to take a 7-4 lead over the Tigers. With the Maple Leafs leading 8-5, Georgetown turned up its defensive pressure. Consecutive blocks from freshman Adam Szewinski were part of another 4-point run that moved GC back ahead. Goshen got 1 back to tie the set before the Tigers countered with another run to take a 12-9 lead and force a Maple Leaf timeout. Goshen briefly took momentum back and tied the set at 12. Georgetown countered with an 8-1 run, racing to a 20-13 lead thanks to strong serving from Heinemann and Yepes. The pair would link up on the final play as Yepes put away a perfect pass from Heinemann for the 25-19 set win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Credit goes to Goshen as the Maple Leafs would not go down without a fight. Goshen scored the first 3 points of the 3rd set and led for most of the set. The patented Georgetown run would not materialize until the Tigers trailed 20-15. Enter Finn Heinemann. The junior from Germany took over on serve with multiple aces and assists in a 7-1 run that saw Georgetown finally take the lead at 22-21. The teams traded points as Goshen held off 2 match points before a serve error and a final kill from Jose Acuna Yepes polished off the sweep, 27-25, in the 3rd.
Yepes was one of 3 Tigers with double-digit kills in the game. He and Tyler Chavez finished with 10 each, while Krzysztof Kowalski ended with 11 while hitting a robust .364. Finn Heinemann ended the day with 40 assists, 7 digs, and 4 aces.
