Men's Volleyball cruises by Brescia

Men's Volleyball needed just over 60 minutes to dispatch of Brescia in straight sets and remain perfect in the Mid-South Conference after a 25-16, 25-9, 25-13 win.

Georgetown wasted no time asserting its dominance on this night at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym. Kills from Tyree Wesley and Ryan Gunn got it rolling and Brescia took an immediate timeout. Gunn added 2 more kills out of the timeout. Finn Heinemann was on serve throughout and capped the 7-0 start with an ace, before Brescia got on the board. Krzysztof Kowalski buried the next Brescia offering into the floor to take the serve back and keep the roll going. Brescia settled in and got as close as 4 at 13-9 before Georgetown put its collective foot down and began to speed away. LC Newton eventually took serve and led the closeout as the Tigers took the 1st, 25-16.

Set 2 looked like a carbon copy of the 1st. Finn Heinemann took serve and went on a long run with it. Led by kills from Gunn and Kowalski, the Tigers scored the first 6 points of the 2nd set and never looked back. With the lead at 9-3, Georgetown began to rotate new players into the match. Brandon Gitschier led the charge with 3 straight points on serve to push the lead to 12-3. Soon after, Head Coach Jim Dwyer sent Santana Roybal-Benson and Jose Acuna Yepes on the floor and the beat kept going. Georgetown rolled to a 25-9 win in the set and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Brescia put up its best fight of the night early in set 3. The Bearcats led 6-5 before the Tigers began to claw back. Jose Acuna Yepes started an 8-1 run that sent Georgetown charging into a 13-7 lead. Brescia fought back with 3 straight to get within 13-10 and called a timeout. The move proved to backfire as Georgetown scored 9 straight out of the timeout. Finn Heinemann tallied 3 aces and then gave way to LC Newton, who twice set up Roybal-Benson for kills. Brandon Gegus ultimately closed out the 3rd as Georgetown closed out a commanding performance with a 25-13 win in the 3rd.

The Tigers tallied 46 kills and hit an impressive .420 on the night. Ryan Gunn led the front line with 10 kills and hit .533. Jose Acuna Yepes was not far behind with 8 kills but hit .583 to best Gunn on this night. Krzysztof Kowalski ended with 7 kills while hitting .455. Finn Heinemann was everywhere on this night. The junior setter dished out 33 assists and added 6 aces and 5 digs. CJ Bride tallied 13 digs, giving him 30 in his last 2 outings.

Georgetown will now enjoy a break in the schedule and will not return to action until Saturday, March 16th in a tri-match at Siena Heights. The Tigers will take on the hosts at 10:00AM, followed by a noon match against Olivet Nazarene.
