Newton leads sweep of Midway
Senior setter, LC Newton, took advantage of a starting opportunity on Wednesday night and delivered with 40 assists and led a Tiger offense that hit .416 in a sweep of Midway for the team's 19th win of the year.
After an early exchange with Georgetown leading 8-6, the Tigers got a kill from Michal Bak that set off a run of 4 straight to expand the lead to 12-6 and provide breathing room. Midway got back within 14-9 before Ryan Gunn and Tyree Wesley paired for another 4-0 run and an 18-9 lead, which sent Midway into a timeout. The Eagles countered with 4 straight out of the timeout to get back within 5. Georgetown took over after a service error and closed the set out on a 6-2 run to take the opener, 25-15.
Set 2 saw Midway come out with an added level of fight and aggression. The Eagles stayed with the 10th-ranked Tigers most of the way. With Georgetown leading 13-12, the Tigers got back-to-back kills from Tyler Chavez and Jose Acuna Yepes and combined with a Midway error, GC had its largest lead at 16-12. Midway continued to fight and got all the way back to level at 19, which forced Georgetown to call a timeout to regroup. It worked. Thanks to Midway errors and 2 more Tyler Chavez kills, the Tigers scored 5 straight out of the timeout for a 24-19 lead. Midway got 2 back, but then put a serve into the net to give the Tigers a 25-21 win and 2-0 match lead.
The Tigers went back to business in set 3. After the teams split the first 2 points, Santana Roybal-Benson started a run of 4 in a row for Georgetown. Will Connaughton and Tyler Chavez were also in on the run, all receiving strong passing from LC Newton. Midway never got closer than 2 points the rest of the way. With the GC lead at 11-9, Roybal-Benson put another ball away that started a 10-3 run to push the lead to 21-12. Miguel Ariza Vega polished off the sweep with late passes from Newton again to take care of the 3rd, 25-15.
LC Newton led the way with 40 assists, along with 4 digs and a block assist. Miguel Ariza Vega was perfect on offense, going 7-for-7 on kill attempts. Tyler Chavez led GC with 9 kills, while Will Connaughton had 7 along with a .417 hitting percentage. Santana Roybal-Benson added 5 kills in the middle while hitting .571.
