Tigers exact revenge with sweep on Senior Night

Senior Night is always a highly emotional time for all involved. It was no different for Men's Volleyball on Tuesday night as Georgetown said thank you to 10 seniors who put the program on the national map. In front of the biggest and loudest crowd of the season, Georgetown delivered a virtuoso performance in sweeping Campbellsville. The win gave the Tigers a measure of revenge from earlier in the year and put GC back in control of the MSC title race.

Both teams came ready for this intense battle from the start. Campbellsville hit .348 in the first set, while Georgetown hit .385. Campbellsville got the opening point off an attack error from Krzysztof Kowalski. It was the first and last attack error of Kowalski on the night. He answered with consecutive kills moments later to put Georgetown ahead, 3-1. Ryan Gunn then took serve and delivered back-to-back aces to push the lead to 6-2. Campbellsville clawed back, eventually taking a lead of 13-11 in the 1st. Gunn and Kowalski answered with kills after a CU service error to put Georgetown back up, 14-13. The teams continued to trade points and serves until the set was tied at 21. Enter Ryan Gunn. Playing at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym for the final time, Gunn found another kill and after a CU timeout, he delivered two straight aces as Georgetown took the first set, 25-21.

Set 2 proved tight from the get go once more. After the teams split the first 14 points, Campbellsville made its move. CU scored 9 of the next 12 points to surge ahead, 16-10, giving a raucous crowd a feeling it may be in for a long night. Georgetown had other ideas. Krzysztof Kowalski started the rally with a kill from Kacper Dobrowolski. CJ Bride took serve and delivered an ace. After an error and an Adam Szewinski kill, Georgetown had scored 4 straight to get within 2. Campbellsville stemmed the tide and led 19-16, but Georgetown would not be denied on this night. Kills from Adam Szewinski, 2 from Ryan Gunn and 1 from Kacper Dobrowolski were part of a 5-0 run that saw Georgetown race to a 21-19 and send a stunned Campbellsville team into a timeout. The teams traded points after the timeout, but the momentum was on Georgetown's side as Kowalski finished out the comeback, giving the Tigers a 25-23 win and 2-0 match lead.

Although Campbellsville got out to a 3-2 lead in the 3rd, it was clear the wind had been taken out of its sails as Georgetown got rolling in the 3rd and slowly asserted its dominance. Georgetown did not commit a single attack error in the set while hitting a staggering .560. Campbellsville tallied a match-high 6 errors in the 3rd, allowing Georgetown to keep the pressure on. Georgetown took the lead at 4-3 and never trailed again, en route to a 25-16 3rd set win to polish off the sweep.

The combination of Ryan Gunn and Krzysztof Kowalski were simply brilliant on this night. The pair combined for 29 kills and just 2 attack errors. Gunn hit a staggering .609, while Kowalski was right there at .565. Kacper Dobrowolski got the start in his home swan song and delivered the goods with 37 assists, 5 digs and a kill. Freshman Adam Szewinski showed the future is very bright as he finished with 6 kills, hit .750, and had 2 solo blocks and 2 block assists.

Georgetown has 2 regular season games remaining at Brescia and at Rio Grande. If the Tigers win both, they will clinch the #1 seed for the Mid-South Conference Tournament.
