
Volleyball picks up 4th straight RSC sweep
After a lengthy first set, Georgetown took control of Saturday's matinee against Midway and rolled to a 3-0 sweep, the 4th in 4 RSC matches on the season.
The Tigers and Eagles split the first 12 points of the opening set. Georgetown then rolled off 3 straight, including an ace from Santino Zucchiati. Midway countered with a staggering 7-0 run to surge into a 13-9 lead and force Georgetown into a timeout to regroup. Kristjan Unt helped lead a 5-1 charge to tie the set at 14. Midway continued to fight back and scored the following 3 to retake command. An ace from Andrew Mayhew was proceeded by another kill from Unt to get the Tigers back within 1. Midway took an 18-16 lead, but Georgetown came back with 3 straight, punctuated by a Michal Bak block for a 19-18 lead. The teams continued to trade points until the set was tied at 23. Adam Szewinski delivered an ace to give Georgetown a set point. Midway refused to relent and held off 5 set points. Georgetown finally closed out on its 6th try with a kill from Michal Bak to take the set, 29-27.
Georgetown used the momentum to restore order in the 2nd. The Tigers rolled off 6 of the first 8 points to establish control. Leading 11-8, Adam Szewinski delivered 3 straight kills up the middle, then followed with a block to push Georgetown's lead to 7. The Tigers continued to pull away, building a 9-point lead on multiple occassions to take the set, 25-16. Georgetown hit .462 in the set compared to .000 for the Eagles.
The 3rd set was even more dominant for Georgetown. A 6-1 start put Midway in an early hole. The Eagles settled in to get the set to 9-5, but Georgetown countered with the next 4 to take a 13-4 lead. Midway got back within 6 at 15-9, but Santino Zucchiati delivered 2 straight kills to push the lead back out. In the end, Georgetown hit a staggering .615 in the 3rd with 17 kills and only 1 attack error in rolling to a 25-16 win to complete the sweep.
Andrew Mayhew got the start at setter on this day and paced the offense with 36 assists and 2 aces. Kristjan Unt tallied 12 kills while hitting .370. Adam Szewinski was dominant in the middle with 9 kills, a .667 hitting percentage, 2 solo blocks and an ace. Santino Zucchiati finished a kill shy of a double-double as he also added 10 digs.
The Tigers will go for their 5th straight RSC win on Friday when they travel to Brescia. Start time is set for 7:00pm.
