Tigers drop opener vs Union

In a game where hits where hard to come by for 6 innings, Union's bats were able to muster an offensive in the top of the 7th. It was just enough to defeat the Tigers, 6-5, in Georgetown's 2023 opener.

The Tigers got out to an early lead when Kylee West tallied a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 2nd that scored Cassie Rannells and gave Georgetown a 1-0 lead. The lead would grow to 2-0 in the bottom of the 4th when Kaylyn Barnett launched a solo bomb over the center field wall.

Union tied the game up with a run in the 5th and a solo home run in the 6th. In the 7th, the Bulldogs offense found itself. 3 straight singles got the Bulldogs in business, driving in the 1st run of the inning, putting Union ahead of Georgetown, 3-2. Sarah Claxon returned to the mound in relief of Emma Cummings, but the Bulldogs kept hitting. 2 singles and a wild pitch allowed 2 more runs to score, making it a 5-2 game, all with no outs. The Tigers then turned to Elle Prewitt on the mound to keep the game in reach. Prewitt fired a wild pitch against her first batter, allowing a 4th run to score, making it a 6-2 game, before she was able to settle in for 3 straight outs.

Georgetown then went to work in the bottom of the 7th. Stevie Shepherd led off with a single to center then stole 2nd. Sarah Claxon followed with a single to left, putting runners at the corners. With Destiny Wallace coming in to run for Claxon, and 1 out, Ashley Shelton doubled to deep center, scoring Shepherd and sending Wallace to 3rd, making the game 6-3. Rannells then followed with a 2-run single to center, bringing the Tigers within 1.

The Tigers run would end there as consecutive groundouts would end the game and send the Tigers to a season-opening loss. Georgetown finished the game with 9 runners left on base.
