Hill shines, bats erupt for 11 in win over Union

Georgetown scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th of game 1 against Union. With a short break between games and the Tigers seeing the same Union pitcher for game 2, Georgetown went in confident and let the bats fly. The Tigers scored 11 runs in the 1st 3 innings in a 5-inning shutout to split the opening series of 2023.

Kaylyn Barnett put the pressure on early by drawing a leadoff walk in the bottom of the 1st. She advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch. With 2 out, Ashley Shelton singled to left, bringing Barnett home and opening the scoring. Shelton would steal 2nd and score off a Mallory Myers double to center. The Tigers took a 2-0 lead to the 2nd.

After a 1-2-3 top of the inning, Georgetown's offense went back to work. Peyton Beger drew a leadoff walk, while Barnett was hit by a pitch to reach base for the 2nd time in as many innings. With 2 outs once more, the Tigers converted. Stevie Shepherd singled to left, scoring both Barnett and Beger, pushing the lead to 4. Sarah Claxon followed with a single to left and the Tigers led 5-0 after 2.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Georgetown did not wait for 2 outs to push runs across. After a leadoff bunt single from Mallory Myers, Cassie Rannells singled to 3rd. Beger would reach on an error that scored Myers and sent Rannells to 3rd. Maria Fratangelo followed with a single that brought Rannells after Beger stole 2nd. Fratangelo would then steal 2nd herself to set up an RBI opportunity for Destiny Wallace. Wallace delivered with a double over 3rd base, scoring Beger. Barnett would be hit by another pitch to load the bases. After a flyout, Sarah Claxon stepped up and singled to short, scoring both Wallace and Fratangelo, making it a 10-0 lead. Ashley Shelton would follow with a sacrifice fly, scoring Barnett, and making it an 11-0 Tigers lead after 3.

From there, freshman Kelsie Hill finished the job on the mound. In her Tigers debut, Hill was excellent, going the full 5 innings, while allowing just 2 hits, 2 walks and striking out 4.

The Tigers are next in action on Saturday at the Tiger Softball Complex on Saturday against the University of Northwestern Ohio for a doubleheader starting at 2:00pm. They'll also play UNOH on Sunday, starting at 1:00pm.
