Hill polishes off sweep of Midway

Kelsie Hill took the mound in game 2 of the Tigers doubleheader against Midway looking to follow the lead of Sarah Claxon's outing in the opener. While the strikeout total was lower than that of Claxon earlier in the day, the number of allowed runs was also lower. Hill tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just 4 hits as Georgetown completed the sweep with a 5-0 win, extending the team's win streak to 5 straight.

Midway got a leadoff single in the 1st but Hill settled down after and no threat came of the runner. Georgetown's offense got going in the 1st again against the Eagles. Stevie Shepherd singled and moved to 2nd following a Mallory Myers walk. Sarah Claxon reached on a fielder's choice. She and Myers would pull off a double steal to get to 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Cassie Rannells stepped in and delivered a 2-run single to right, giving Hill the early lead.

In the 2nd, Midway posed its biggest threat. After a leadoff pop up, the Eagles would pick up back-to-back singles, followed by a walk to load the bases with just 1 out. Hill showed her poise by inducing a pop up to 3rd and a fly ball to center to end the threat.

The game would go quiet until Georgetown gave its pitcher added insurance in the bottom of the 5th. Ashley Shelton led off with a single down the right field line. She would move to 2nd on a Maria Fratangelo single. Destiny Wallace then stepped in and laid down a perfect sacrifice to move Shelton to 3rd and Fratangelo to 2nd. Kaylyn Barnett continued the small ball with a sac fly to right, moving Fratangelo to 3rd and scoring Shelton, making it 3-0 Georgetown. Stevie Shepherd would then single home Fratangelo, giving the Tigers a 4-run lead after 5.

Midway threatened in the top of the 6th. After a leadoff fly out, Midway would put runners on thanks to a walk and bunt single. The next batter smoked a line drive to the right side, but Cassie Rannells shuffled to her left and stabbed the ball out of the air. She then had the presence of mind to fire over to 2nd and get the lead runner for an inning-ending double play. Georgetown would add another run in the bottom of the inning, giving Hill a 5-run lead for the 7th.

The Eagles again made a move to at least threaten the shutout. A leadoff walk, followed by a sacrifice, put a runner in scoring position with 1 out. Following a 2nd walk, a fly ball would put runners at 2nd and 3rd with 2 out. The final out came when the Midway batter laced a believed single to right field, but Destiny Wallace charged hard and fired a missile to Mallory Myers at first, beating the runner and ending the game, preserving the shutout.

Kelsie Hill finished the game allowing just 4 hits while striking out 3. The Tigers will take their 5-game win streak into the weekend and back into MSC play against Thomas More, out at the Tiger Softball Complex.
