Tigers exact revenge on Cumberland in MSC Tourney

Georgetown had its sights set on Cumberland just 2 days after letting a lead slip away in the first meeting between the schools in the MSC Tournament. The Tigers exact a huge measure of revenge by beating and eliminating Cumberland, 9-0, in a quick 5-inning affair.

Coming off a 12-run outing in Friday's win over Freed-Hardeman, Georgetown's bats went right to work against the Phoenix. In the bottom of the 1st, Kaylyn Barnett led off with a double. Ashley Shelton followed with a bunt so well-placed that she reached first and Barnett came all the way around to score. Mallory Myers followed with a single and advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch that sent Shelton to 3rd. Sarah Claxon followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Shelton. Cassie Rannells followed with a slashing single to left that scored Myers and the Tigers had a 3-0 lead after 1.

The Tigers put a run on the board in the 2nd and 3rd innings to take a 5-0 lead to the 4th. GC went for the knockout blow in the inning. Ashley Shelton got things going with a 1-out single and a steal of 2nd. Mallory Myers followed with an infield single that moved Shelton to 3rd. Shelton would then score on a Phoenix error that moved Myers to 3rd. Sarah Claxon drew a walk and would be lifted on the bases for Brooke Chick, who promptly stole 2nd. 2 batters later, Peyton Beger laced a single up the middle, scoring both Myers and Chick, putting the Tigers up 8-0 and in position to win via the run rule. Stevie Shepherd added another run for good measure as she doubled home Destiny Wallace for a 9-0 lead that would be the final score.

Ashley Shelton led the Tigers going 3-3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Peyton Beger finished 2-3 with 2 RBI. In total, 5 Tigers finished with multiple hits in the 13-hit effort.

All of the Tigers offense was in support of Sarah Claxon who threw another stellar, efficient complete game shut out. In the 5-inning game, Claxon allowed just 4 hits and no walks on just 58 pitches, picking up her 17th win of the season.

Georgetown will take on Campbellsville later on Saturday at 6:00pm ET with the winner advancing to Sunday's Mid-South Conference Championship.
