With 50 points scored in the first 10 minutes, it was evident Georgetown College women's basketball Mid-South Conference opener in Williamsburg, Ky. was going to be a barn burner. The Tigers (4-1, 0-1) went back and forth with University of the Cumberlands, but a late cold spell doomed them in a 100-95 setback.
The Patriots (5-1, 1-0) scored the final four points after GC had pulled within one with 1:22 left. Kassie Monday hit a three to give UC an eight-point edge. A few plays later Kaylie Monday hit another three and a nine-point Patriots lead, 87-78, with 6:52 remaining. The Tigers responded with a 17-9 run, trailing 96-95, but could get no closer.
GC held the edge after the first quarter and held on through a battle in the second 10 minutes. A three from Kaylie Monday put the home team up early in the third. GC continued to claw and held several leads, but when the dust settled, after three Cumberlands had a four-point edge.
AJ Stevenson had the hot hand for the Tigers, hitting 50 percent from the field – and three-point line – on her way to a career-high 26 points. Madison Darnell chipped in with 14, while Grace White and Cassie Colon each had 11. Darnell also had 10 rebounds.
Georgetown is back in action 2 pm Saturday at University of Pikeville. The Bears (2-1, 0-1) lost 64-62 to No. 2 Campbellsville University in their league opener.
