Jazzmyn Elston was the shot in the arm Georgetown College women's basketball team needed in the final 100 seconds of a road win against University of Pikeville. The Tigers (5-1, 1-1) trailed by four after a pair of Morgan Stamper layups for the Bears (2-2, 0-2).
The senior scored two layups in the final stretch, one with five seconds left, to secure an 80-78 victory. UPike had one last look, but the shot bounded out and AJ Stevenson collected the final rebound.
Elston finished with a new career-high of 18 points, while Stevenson poured in 15. Grace White had 12 and Callie Jackson chipped in with 10.
Georgetown raced out to a 21-16 lead after the first 10 minutes, but it was all tied at 37 heading into the break. UPike opened the third with a 6-0 run to grab momentum. Elston helped to erase that, midway through the quarter with four straight free throws. GC was back up 49-48. The final four minutes was one of trading baskets and ended with the visitors ahead by two, 59-57.
It continued to be a slugfest until a late Bears run put the home team up four with 1:41 remaining. Elston helped to erase the advantage and after UPike hit a three with 31 seconds left, the game was knotted at 78.
Back-to-back time outs set up the right play as GC went on the attack, bounced the ball off a screen to Elston who cashed it in down low.
Georgetown is back in action 7 pm Tuesday at Cumberland University.
