Women's Basketball Earns Season Split with UC

GEORGETOWN, Ky. - Saturday afternoon marked the 100th all-time meeting between Georgetown College and the University of the Cumberlands in women's basketball, and the 2012 NAIA Fab Four team was in on hand to watch. While the Patriots defeated the Tigers earlier in the season, the Tigers found revenge Saturday, 96-79, inside Davis-Reid Alumni Gymnasium.

Behind huge efforts from Grace White and Jazzmyn Elston, the Tigers (14-7, 7-6 MSC) raced out to a big lead early and never looked back, as they defeated Cumberlands (13-7, 7-5 MSC). UC held the early lead at 3-2, but an 11-0 run for Georgetown quickly gave the Tigers a 10-point lead at 13-3 with 5:39 left on the first quarter clock. The Tigers blistered the nets at a 56% clip in the opening stanza, and with 10 minutes in the books, Georgetown enjoyed a 27-17 lead.

White drilled a 3-point shot at the 6:50 mark of the second frame to stretch Georgetown's lead to 15 points, and the advantage grew to as many as 17 in the period, before UC rallied to trim the halftime margin back to 10 at 46-36.

A 13-0 run in the middle stages of the third quarter all but salted the game away for the Tigers. The stretch began with a Jalynn Landversicht layup less than two minutes into the quarter and spanned 4:06 of game time, featuring contributions to the scoring column from Elston, White, and Madison Darnell as Georgetown opened up its lead, 61-38.

The fourth quarter began with Georgetown leading 70-50, as the Tigers started a 7-0 run capped by a jumper from Callie Jackson. After reaching a 27-point margin the Tigers' lead remained at or above the 20 points until the final two minutes of the game.

White led all scorers with 27 in the game, she made eight of her 12 shot attempts from the floor, and she was a perfect 9-for-9 from the foul line. Elston added 25 points and shot 11-for-22 in the game, Darnell netted 13 points, and Jackson chipped in 10 as well. Darnell reeled in 13 boards and narrowly missed out on a triple-double as she had nine assists. White had seven helpers as well.

As a team, Georgetown made 37 of 69 (53.6%) shots in the game, 6 of 21 (28.6%) 3-point tries, and 16 of 22 (72.7%) free throws. The Tigers out-rebounded UC 38-37, and they had a team total of 25 assists in the contest. Georgetown also used the fast break to great effect, out-scoring UC on the run 27-11.

With eight games remaining in the season, the Tigers now hold the third spot in the Mid-South Conference standings. Georgetown will play the third of a four game home stand on Monday night, Jan. 31 against Life University (6-15, 2-11 MSC) at 6 p.m. Eastern as the calendar gets ready to turn to the season's final month.
