Tigers Fall to Cumberland in OT

GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The Georgetown College women's basketball team fell in overtime to visiting Cumberland University, 70-68, on Wednesday night. The Tigers finished with four players in double-figures in points with Grace White leading the way as she tallied a team-high 17 points.



The Tigers move to 16-8 overall and 9-7 in the conference while Cumberland improved to 10-11 and 5-9 in the league.

Cumberland trailed early 1-0 to open the game but was able to put together a 7-0 run to go up 7-1 with 8:29 remaining in the quarter. Georgetown's Jassmyn Elston drained a 3-pointer off a pass from Madison Darnell to make it a 7-4 and to pull the Tigers within three. The Phoenix used an 8-0 run to open up a 15-4 lead before AJ Stevenson used a traditional three-point play to spark a 9-3 run before the quarter closed out with Cumberland leading 18-13 going into the second.

Georgetown picked up right where it left off to start the second as it used a 5-0 run in the first two and half minutes to tie the game at 18-18. Cumberland reclaimed the lead to make it 20-18 with 6:20 left but that lead didn't last long as the Tigers strung together a 7-0 run to take a 25-20 lead with just under four minutes remaining. Both teams would trade baskets to close out the half giving the Tigers the edge going into halftime with a 33-28 lead.

The Tigers opened up the third quarter strong as they pushed its lead to 10 off a pair of layups and a free throw. The offense wasn't an issue for Georgetown in the quarter but the defense was the star of the show as it held Cumberland to eight points for the quarter while holding the Phoenix to 20 percent shooting from the field and 3-point range. The Tigers closed the third with a 48-36 lead.

Both teams went scoreless for just under a minute and a half to open up the fourth before Georgetown's Callie Jackson laid one in and followed up with the foul shot to make it 51-36. Cumberland used a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 51-44 with 8:10 remaining. Both teams for six minutes would exchange baskets giving the Tigers a three-point lead (59-56) with 2:10 remaining in the quarter. Coming out of a 30-second timeout, Georgetown tacked on a foul shot to make it 60-56 with 1:31 left. Cumberland was able to get a tip-in to it a two-point game with just over a minute left. With 56 seconds left Cumberland drained a pair of foul shots to tie the game at 60. Georgetown's Sophie Smith hit a free throw with 15 seconds remaining to put the Tigers up 61-60, but a late foul with eight seconds left allowed Cumberland to connect on its second foul shot after missing the first to tie the game at 61 and force overtime.

Georgetown reclaimed a one-point lead to start overtime and give the Tigers a 62-61 lead. Cumberland drained three free throws straight to put the Phoenix up 64-62 following a foul on a missed three-pointer. Cumberland used a 4-0 run to push its lead to six, but Georgetown used a pair of foul shots and a layup to climb within in two. The Phoenix added a pair of free throws to make it 70-66 with :23 seconds left. The Tigers laid one in to make it a two-point game with 17 seconds left, and then forced a turnover and attempted a layup that didn't go as time expired.

Georgetown controlled the glass as it grabbed 62 boards to Cumberland's 52. The Tiger's shot 60.6 percent from the line for the game.

Elston finished with 15 points while shooting 6-for-18 from the field. Teammates Madison Darnell and Callie Jackson each finished with a double-double in points and rebounds. Darnell tallied 11 points and 15 rebounds while Jackson registered 11 points and grabbed 12 boards.

Georgetown is back in action on Saturday as it travels to Lindsey Wilson College for a 3 p.m. tip.
