Women's Basketball Survives Scare at Life (Ga.)

MARIETTA, Ga. - Saturday afternoon's women's basketball game between Georgetown College and Life University was a defensive-minded affair. The nature of the contest kept things close and kept the home team in the game, but in the end, Georgetown did just enough to secure the road victory.

Georgetown (19-9, 12-8 MSC) shot the ball at below 30-percent for the game, but they got the job done at the foul line as they took the win over Life (6-21, 2-17 MSC) 50-45.

Five quick points from Madison Darnell and AJ Stevenson gave Georgetown the early 5-2 lead, but the teams struggled mightily from the floor in the first quarter. The teams combined to shoot 6-for-30 (20%) from the floor, including just 1-for-10 (10%) from deep, and when the period ended, the Tigers led 9-6.

In the middle of the second quarter, Georgetown put together the first real run of the game for either team. After a 3-pointer cut the Tigers' lead to 12-11 with 5:53 to play in the half, Georgetown scored the next nine points to take a 21-11 lead. The teams traded 3-point buckets in the final 100 seconds, and at the half, Georgetown led 24-14.

Life began to rally in the third frame. The Runnin' Eagles quickly trimmed the deficit to six, and they eventually closed to within three times in the quarter, including in the final minute, and at the end of the period, Georgetown led, but only 35-30.

The fourth quarter was a battle throughout, with neither team conceding anything without a struggle. Life continued to try to get even, something they had not been able to do all afternoon, and with 8:35 to play, they did just that, leveling the score at 37. Georgetown scored the next seven points in the game to push their advantage to 44-37 with 5:07 to go, but Life managed one final rally. The Runnin' Eagles got to within four points, but they got no closer, and Georgetown survived for the win, 50-45.

Jazzmyn Elston led the Tigers with 15 points in the game, and Stevenson chipped in a dozen. Darnell led the way on the glass, lassoing 13 rebounds, and Grace White dished out three assists.

At a team, Georgetown was just 16-for-54 (29.6%) shooting in the game, and only 3-for-18 (16.7%) from behind the arc. At the foul line, though, the Tigers took care of business, as they made 15 of 17 (88.2%) attempts in the contest. The Tigers out-rebounded Life 43-33, and Georgetown made great use of the fast break to the tune of a 12-0 advantage.

Georgetown will head to Crestview Hills, Kentucky on Thursday night for their final road game of the season. The Tigers will face the tall task of taking on the NAIA No. 2 Thomas More Saints (23-3, 16-2 MSC) for the Saints' Senior Night festivities. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. Eastern.
