Darnell breaks rebounding record in Tigers rout
Madison Darnell is now the all-time leading rebounder in Georgetown College Women's Basketball history. The Russell, KY native grabbed her 922nd career rebound with just over 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter of Georgetown's 85-37 win over Wilberforce. Darnell surpassed Suzanne Pennington (1985-1989) to grab the record. On the Tigers next possession, Darnell scored a basket, allowing Head Coach Jeff Nickel to call a timeout and let the team celebrate Darnell's accomplishment. Darnell entered the game with 914 rebounds, 8 shy of the record.
The Tigers defense in the game allowed Darnell to pile up the rebounds. Wilberforce (3-16, 0-15) made just 11 baskets for the game and shot just 16% from the field. The record was part of a 3rd quarter in which Georgetown (13-8, 9-6) outscored Wilberforce, 31-4 to further an 18-point halftime lead. Wilberforce shot just 1-19 from the field in the quarter, while Georgetown was 10-14 from the floor to blow the game wide open.
The performance proved to be a total team effort throughout the game. The Tigers finished with 23 assists on 29 made baskets. 7 Tigers finished with multiple assists, led by 6 assists from Sophie Smith. Izzy Lamparty ended the night with a game-high 23 points. Erin Toller added 17 points and 5 steals. Callie Jackson finished with 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists in just 15 minutes of action off the bench. AJ Stevenson added 10 points.
Georgetown next heads to Tennessee to take on Freed-Hardeman on Thursday night at 6:30pm ET.
