Nickel gets 250th career win in Tigers romp

Georgetown returned to Davis-Reid Alumni Gym on Thursday night looking to build back momentum after a tough 3-game road trip. The Tigers took their frustrations out on a UT-Southern team that dressed only 8 players. Georgetown started the game on a 16-0 run, en route to an 88-46 win, giving the Tigers their 10th win in conference play. The win also marked the 250th in the head coaching career of Jeff Nickel.

UT-Southern would not get on the scoreboard until the 3:47 mark of the 1st quarter. The Firehawks shot 3-12 from the field in the 1st and committed 8 turnovers, leading to the early Georgetown romp. Normally known for her scoring (which would come), Erin Toller spearheaded the Tigers defense with 4 steals in the opening 10 minutes, cutting off the Firehawks efforts to get its offense going. Toller would score 9 in the quarter, 1 point more than all of UT-Southern as Georgetown took a 22-8 lead into the 2nd.

The Firehawks did settle in a bit in the 2nd quarter, cutting its turnover number from 8 to 2, but still shot just 5-12 from the floor. Georgetown shot at a 57% clip in the quarter, punctuated by 2 baskets from Lisa Suljemani, giving the senior 1000 career collegiate points, sending the Tigers bench and crowd into an uproar. Erin Toller added 10 more points in the 2nd as the Tigers took a 43-24 lead into halftime.

The halftime break did nothing to change the story on this night. Georgetown continued its dominance in the 3rd. The Tigers shot 9-14 from the floor, including 5-7 from 3-point range, en route to a 28-point period. The defense never waned either. UTS went just 3-13 overall and the Tigers steamrolled to the 4th, leading 71-35.

Georgetown used the 4th quarter to rest its starting group and allow the Tigers depth to shine. Callie Jackson had 6 points and 5 boards in the 4th, while Raevyn Harris collected 4 rebounds, 2 steals, and a block. Jordan Rogers and Shelbi Wilson got their offense going while Suljemani knocked down another 3, leading to the 42-point win.

The Tigers dominated the game in every fashion in a needed performance with only 3 games to go in the regular season. Erin Toller again was the high scorer with 28. Izzy Lamparty and Lisa Suljemani each tallied 11, while Callie Jackson and Madison Darnell added 10 points each.
