Darnell breaks games played record in Tigers win
On a day where Madison Darnell broke the Georgetown women's basketball all-time record for games played, it was fitting she turned in a double-double and led a strong Tigers defensive effort in a 69-50 win. Darnell finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds while helping hold Cumberland to just 31% shooting.
Having already owned the all-time career rebounding record, Darnell surpassed Tigers legend Neeley Thomas by playing in her 137th game as a Tiger.
The 1st quarter was a defensive battle on both sides. Cumberland shot just 4-14 in the opening frame but took a 10-9 lead into the 2nd as Georgetown could only muster 3 makes on 12 attempts.
In the 2nd, the Tigers defense turned in one of its best quarters of the season. Cumberland committed 3 turnovers and shot just 3-16 from the floor without going to the foul line. The Phoenix mustered just 6 points in the period. Conversely, the Tigers shot 47% in outscoring the Phoenix by 11 to take a 28-16 lead to the half.
The 3rd quarter carried the same story as the Phoenix again could not make buckets against the Tigers front. 4-12 shooting and no 3-point attempts but the Phoenix in a deeper hole. 5 points each from Madison Darnell and Callie Jackson in the quarter pushed the Tigers lead to 44-27 entering the 4th.
In the 4th, Cumberland showed signs of life offensively. The Phoenix hit 4-5 from three but could not get stops. Georgetown shot 57% from the floor and 9-12 from the line, deterring any hope of a CU comeback. AJ Stevenson and Jalynn Landversicht combined for 11 points, while Shelbi Wilson scored 5 points in the final 2 minutes, pushing the Tigers to a 69-50 win.
The Tigers put together a full team effort on a night Erin Toller was saddled with foul trouble and finished with just 4 points. Izzy Lamparty turned in a solid performance with 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 steals. Landversicht and Stevenson finished with 9 each. Lisa Suljemani chipped in with 11 points off the bench.
Georgetown heads to Campbellsville on Thursday before returning home next Saturday for Senior Day against Lindsey Wilson.
