Tigers go to OT for 1st Tourney win since 2013

"Wow!!!!" That was the reaction of Head Coach Jeff Nickel as his Tigers picked up their first NAIA Tournament win since 2013, 70-68, in overtime over MidAmerica Nazarene.

Madison Darnell got the Tigers off to a strong start, combining for the first 6 Tiger points, in taking an early 6-2 lead over the Pioneers. As the 1st quarter moved along, MNU went to its bread-and-butter: the 3-pointer. Consecutive threes put MNU up 12-7 midway through the first. The Tigers fought back to tie the game at 15, but the Pioneers would knock down a late 3 to take an 18-15 lead to the 2nd.

The Tigers entered danger zone early in the 2nd as MNU hit 2 threes to start the quarter, taking a 9-point lead. A lone Callie Jackson bucket was all the Tigers could muster over the first 4-plus minutes of the quarter as the Pioneers took a 28-17 lead. Georgetown showed true #TigerPride and got going. 2 quick buckets from Erin Toller and Jalynn Landversicht cut the deficit to 7. Toller would hit a 3 moments later, bringing her team within 6 with just over 3 minutes to go in the quarter. Sophie Smith and Jordan Rogers joined the party and the Tigers found themselves down just 30-28 late in the 2nd. MNU hit 2 late free throws for a 4-point lead at the break, but the Tigers still had momentum.

Georgetown exploded out of the gates in the 3rd, scoring 15 unanswered to turn an 11-point deficit into an 11-point lead at 43-32 with 4:57 to go in the 3rd. The Pioneers would not hit from the field until the 2:47 mark with another 3, but Jordan Rogers countered, giving the Tigers a 50-40 lead with 2:36 remaining. The Pioneers would hit 2 more threes to close the 3rd, but Georgetown held a 52-46 lead going to the 4th.

A 3rd straight 3 from MNU started the 4th and cut the Tigers lead in half. Defense then took over for both sides as the teams traded the occasional basket as time wound down. With 4:18 to go, Jalynn Landversicht knocked down 2 free throws to put GC up 58-54. After a missed MNU 3, Landversicht grabbed the rebound and would bury a 3 of her own, putting the Tigers up 7 with just under 4 to go. Georgetown would go scoreless over the next 3-plus minutes until a jumper from Landversicht put the Tigers up 63-57 with just 38 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, MNU would grab its own board off a missed 3 and would hit its next to bring the game to a 63-60 Tiger lead with 22 seconds to go. With 18 seconds left, the Pioneers forced a turnover. They would miss a tying 3 but Georgetown could not secure the board and lost the ball out of bounds. MNU would take advantage and with 6 seconds to go, the Pioneers knocked down the game-tying 3. The Tigers had one last shot to win it, but a shot from Madison Darnell rolled off the rim, sending this 1st round game to overtime.

It would be the Tigers playing long ball to begin overtime as Sophie Smith hit one from distance to give GC the early lead. MNU would counter inside, and after 2 missed Tiger free throws, the Pioneers would go to the line and hit 1-2 to tie the game at 66 with 1:52 left in OT. 15 seconds later, Madison Darnell drew a foul. The senior hit the 1st and missed the 2nd, but Erin Toller grabbed the critical offensive rebound and found Jalynn Landversicht for a lay-in and a 69-66 lead with 1:16 left. MNU fought back and scored just 14 seconds later, taking the Tiger lead back to 1. The Pioneers would force another GC turnover, but the Tigers defense held strong as Landversicht blocked a go-ahead layup with just 11 seconds to go. MNU retained possession and missed this go-ahead layup. Toller grabbed the board and hit 1-2 at the line. To no one's surprise on this night, MidAmerica Nazarene went for the 3 and the win on the last possession but the shot was off the mark and Georgetown held on for the 70-68 win.

Jalynn Landversicht was given the honor of putting the Georgetown name into the 2nd round on the bracket display. She finished the game with 19 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 steals. She was 1 of 4 Tiger starters to play over 40 minutes in the thrilling win. Sophie Smith had a terrific night with 9 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal. Erin Toller struggled with her shooting and some turnovers but still finished with 16 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals. The inside power duo of Madison Darnell and Izzy Lamparty combined for 19 points and 14 rebounds. The two led a paint effort that saw the Tigers come out plus-20 on points in the paint (42-22).

Georgetown advances to the 2nd round to take on the #1 seed Indiana Wesleyan, who cruised past 16-seed, Southwestern Christian, 99-53. The game is scheduled for a 7:00pm start in Marion, IN. Tickets can be purchased here. The game will also be live streamed ($$) by Indiana Wesleyan.
