27-0 1st half run powers Tigers by Bulldogs
Georgetown got off to a slow start against Wilberforce on Monday night at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym. The Bulldogs scored a quick 4 points to start before the Tigers countered with a 37-3 run over the rest of the 1st half, including 27 unanswered, en route to an 82-34 win for a 3rd straight rout to start the season.
An Izzy Lamparty layup put GC ahead 5-4 in the 1st. Erin Toller knocked down the second of her 2 threes in the quarter and the lead grew from there. It was a 16-7 lead after 1 as the Tigers struggled from the field and the free throw line. Georgetown shot just 30% in the 1st and missed 6 of 7 free throws, but the defense kept the Bulldogs at bay as Wilberforce turned the ball over 8 times in the 1st 10 minutes.
The defense went to another level in the 2nd quarter. Wilberforce went 0-9 in the period along with 9 turnovers. Georgetown started coming along offensively led by 6 points each from Teionni McDaniel, Ellie Wilkerson, and AJ Stevenson. Ultimately, Georgetown outscored Wilberforce 21-0 in the 2nd to take a 37-7 lead at halftime.
Both teams got their respective offenses going in the 3rd. Wilberforce hit 5 of 7 from the floor and 10-14 from the line, but its deficit grew larger as Georgetown knocked down 6 threes in the 3rd. The Tigers put one final defensive stand together in the 4th as Wilberforce went just 2-13 from the field and scored just 7 points.
Teionni McDaniel led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points along with 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 more steals. She now has 10 steals in the 1st three games of her Tiger career. Ellie Wilkerson put together a highly efficient night, scoring 14 points on just 5 field goal attempts.
The defense held the Bulldogs to 28% shooting and forced 25 turnovers, which led to 21 Tiger points. 2nd chance points favored Georgetown, 12-0.
The competition steps up on Friday as Georgetown welcomes 20th-ranked Indiana Tech to Davis-Reid Alumni Gym. Tipoff is at 5:30PM.
