Tiger Defense shines over Stars for 11th straight win

The 13th-ranked Georgetown Tigers knew they faced a stiff test against (RV) Stephens College coming into Thursday's game at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym. The Stars began the season by knocking off #2 Central Methodist and played a tight game at #5 Carroll. Stephens scored the first 6 points in this game, but Georgetown took over from there in a 75-49 win, the 11th straight to start the year. It also marked the 7th time the Tigers held their opponent below 50 points.

After the 6-0 start for Stephens, Izzy Lamparty got Georgetown on the board with 6 straight of her own. A bucket from Erin Toller with 4:01 to go in the 1st put GC up 8-6. After a Stars basket, AJ Stevenson hit a free throw with 2:58 to go to give the Tigers a 9-8 lead. Georgetown would never trail or be tied again. Stevenson hit the 1st of 2 threes to push the lead to 14-10. The lead grew to 19-12 after 1.

The Georgetown defense went up another notch in the 2nd as Stephens did not score for the first 4:11 of the quarter. In that time, the Stars went 0-6 from the floor with 2 turnovers. It allowed the Tigers to push the lead to double digits. Another three from AJ Stevenson gave GC a 27-14 lead with 5:29 to go. The final 4 minutes of the 2nd turned into a Teionni McDaniel showcase. The sophomore guard scored 6 of the Tigers' final 7 points while also tallying 2 rebounds and a steal as Georgetown took a 36-23 lead to the halftime break.

For Stephens, the 3rd quarter started like the 2nd, as the Stars did not record a point for the first 3:25. In that time, Georgetown scored 8 straight to take a 44-23 lead. The Stars also missed 3 shots and turned the ball over twice. Stephens would rebound by making 6 of its final 7 shots, but 7 turnovers in the quarter allowed Georgetown to grow the lead even more. AJ Stevenson scored 8 of her game-high 18 in the 3rd to propel the Tigers to a 57-38 lead going to the 4th.

The GC defense made one final stand in the 4th as Stephens shot just 5-20 and missed all 8 of its 3-point attempts. Jordan Rogers scored all 7 of her points in the quarter to punctuate the 26-point win. In her first start of the season, AJ Stevenson shot 7-12 for the game-high 18 points. Izzy Lamparty turned in a strong game with 15 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Jalynn Landversicht continues her stellar play as a super-sub, finishing with 12 points and 6 rebounds in 21 minutes. Teionni McDaniel also had a strong all-around game, ending with 8 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 2 steals. Callie Jackson added 4 points off the bench. Erin Toller had a quiet night scoring but had 4 steals to go with 5 rebounds and 3 assists.

Georgetown will take the next week plus to focus on finals before hitting the court again on Saturday, December 9th. It will be the only home game of December as the Tigers host West Virginia Tech at 1:00pm.
